Yankees. By: Shekinah Payne. The Beginning. Frank Farrel and Bill Devery first bought the team in 1903 for $18,000 and than moved them to Manhattan in 1903. They were known as the Highlanders in the beginning because their ball park was located at one of the highest spots in Manhattan.

  2. The Beginning • Frank Farrel and Bill Devery first bought the team in 1903 for $18,000 and than moved them to Manhattan in 1903. They were known as the Highlanders in the beginning because their ball park was located at one of the highest spots in Manhattan.

  3. The Highlanders were renamed the Yankees in 1913 after moving to polo grounds. The Yankees were later purchased for $1.25 million by Jacob Ruppert and Col. Tillinghast L’Hommedieu Huston. Soon after the contract of Babe Ruth was purchased for $125,000 from the Red Sox in 1920.

  4. The Yankees were the first team to make numbers a permanent part of their uniform. A few years later the first night game was played at the Yankee Stadium resulting in a 2-1 loss against Washington.

  5. In 1964 80% of the Yankees were purchased by CBS for $11,200,000. Later on CBS bought the remaining 20%. In 1973 George M. Steinbrenner III purchased the Yankees from CBS.

  6. Subway Series • In the first Subway Series since 1956, the Yankees win their 26th World Championship on Oct. 26,2000. In Nov. 2009 the Yankees won their 27th World Championship. Pettitte became the first pitcher to start and record the win.
