  2. What is art?

  3. What is art? Is it… • Something that is pretty to look at? • Something that is hard to make? • Something that makes you feel a certain way?

  4. What is art? • How can we make value judgments about what is good or bad art? • How can we make our own art better? • Which is more important, the way something looks, or the idea behind it?

  5. A little about me… • I grew up in Orange County • I graduated from El Dorado HS in 1999 • I graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art in 2003

  6. A little about me… • I lived in New York City (Brooklyn) for four years, then moved back to Orange County to pursue my teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton. • This is my fifth year at Sunny Hills, and my second year at La Habra.

  15. Classroom Routines • Students must ask permission to use the restroom, or to leave class for any other reason. • A student who is tardy should notify the teacher that they have arrived, in case the teacher has already marked them absent. • After an absence (whether excused or unexcused), it is the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher for any missed assignments. • Late work will be docked 5% for each day it is late. Late work will not be accepted after one week has passed. If, due to outside circumstances, a student is unable to finish a project on time, the student must notify the teacher of the special circumstances in advance of the due date.

  16. Classroom Routines • Students will be given opportunities to receive extra credit. Extra credit can be earned by going above and beyond expectations on a given assignment, or by visiting an art-related place or event (such as a museum or gallery show) and writing a one-page essay about the experience. • Cell phones must be kept put away at all times. Upon first offense, the cell phone will be confiscated for the class period. Upon subsequent offenses, the cell phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day. • MP3 players (such as iPods) are allowed during individual work time, but not during instruction.

  17. Classroom Routines • Students may get up to gather materials or sharpen pencils when needed, except during instruction. • Students will work until the five-minute bell rings, at which time they may begin cleaning up. Once their area is clean, students should wait at their table for the class-end bell to ring. • Students are expected to have materials in class every day, and keep materials in good condition. • NO food, drink, or visitors allowed in class.

  18. Tardiness and Absences TARDIES 3 tardies = 1 hour after school detention 6 tardies = 2 hour Saturday school 9 tardies = 4 hour Saturday school and referral to dean 12 tardies = 1 day suspension ABSENCES 1 unexcused absence = 1 hour after school detention 1 unit point lost for every 3 unexcused absences Students caught leaving early will be given an unexcused absence.

  19. Academic Honesty Students are expected to create authentic, original works of art that reflect their own abilities and ideas. Working on another person’s project for them constitutes academic dishonesty. Consequences for academic dishonesty are in line with the school policy, and may include suspension, parent conference, and/or expulsion.

  20. Classroom Rules • BE ON TIME -Be in the classroom when the bell rings. • BE PREPARED - Have your materials and artwork with you in class every day. - Turn in assignments on time. • BE RESPECTFUL - Listen quietly during instruction or when others are speaking. - Respect others, their ideas, their personal space, and their property. - Participate in keeping a clean classroom environment. - Keep comments about other students’ artwork positive and constructive. • BE PRODUCTIVE - Work in class every day. Failure to do so will negatively affect your grade. - Work on art during art class, not on homework for other classes. - Keep cell phones put away for the duration of the class period. • BE POSITIVE - Have a positive attitude, and put forth your best effort each day.

  21. GRADING GRADING POLICY Grades are based on two main categories: minor projects (sketchbooks, homework, research, technical exercises, quick-writes) and major projects. Small assignments make up 35% of student grades, while large projects make up 55%. The class final will be worth 10%. Late work will be accepted, but will be docked 5% per each day late. Grades will be posted on ABI on an ongoing basis. GRADING SCALE A+: 98 – 100 A: 93 – 96 A-: 90 – 92 B+: 88 – 89 B: 83 – 87 B-: 80 – 82 C+: 78 – 79 C: 73 – 77 C-: 70 – 72 D+: 68 - 69 D: 63 - 67 D-: 60 – 62 F: 0 - 59

  22. GRADING This is what I will be looking for when I evaluate you and your work: • Effort:Did you push yourself beyond what you thought possible? • Work meets requirements:Does the work fulfill objectives/criteria stated at introduction of project? • Innovation of design:Creativity/uniqueness of idea and development • Craftsmanship:Is work done neatly? Is there attention to detail? • Work done on time:Is work done on due date given at introduction?

  23. COURSE GOALS • Develop and expand your aesthetic perception (how you view art). • Develop and expand what you know about art and your skills to express your ideas imaginatively (verbally and technically). • Gain knowledge of historical and cultural developments in art and various ways for looking at them. • Learn and improve craftsmanship. • Make connections to other cultures and career possibilities.

  24. MATERIALS DONATION & CONTRACT • Over the course of the year, you will be provided with a wide variety of art materials to use, many of which will be yours to keep. To help cover the cost of these materials, there is a requested $20 lab donation each semester. Donations can be made in cash or check. • The last page of your syllabus is a contract. The contract is due, signed by both you and your parent/guardian, this Friday.
