  3. Search Strategy – Databases • PubMed and Science Citation Index • Studies in humans published January1966 - June 2009 • China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Science Periodical Database of China • Articles published through June 2009 with in: • (A)Mathematics/ Physics/ Mechanics/ Astronomy • (B) Chemistry/ Metallurgy/ Environment/ Mine Industry • (C) Architecture/ Energy/ Traffic/ Electromechanics • (D) Agriculture • (E) Medicine & Public Health • (F) Literature/ History/ Philosophy • (G) Politics/ Military Affairs/ Law • (H) Education & Social Sciences • (I) Electronic Technology & Information Science • (J) Economics & Managementusing models Hosgood et al.

  4. Search Strategy – Additional Searches • Reviewed bibliography of all published articles reviewed in full • Reviewed bibliography of the two previously published meta-analyses in Chinese • Reviewed bibliography of previous IARC monograph Hosgood et al.

  5. Inclusion Criteria • Case-control study • Provide OR and 95%CI or enough information to calculate OR and 95%CI • In-home exposure only, not occupational or urban exposures • Differentiate coal association from other biomass fuels • Population not part of previously published study Hosgood et al.

  6. Studies Identified

  7. Statistical Methods • Used unadjusted OR and 95%CI from each study • Results were similar when using adjusted ORs and 95%Cs from studies that reported them • Random-effects model • Heterogeneity among studies determined by a χ2-based Q-statistic • Funnel plots • Begg’s test Hosgood et al.
