  1. 9-1a Literal Equations MA.8.A.4.1 …Solve literal equations for a specific variable Learning Goals: -Solve literal equations for an indicated variable

  2. Literal Equations A literal equation is an equation or formula that has more than one variable. Examples of Literal Equations:

  3. The equation for the circumference of a circle is C = 2r. Solve the equation for the radius of the circle. C = 2r Write the equation C = 2r We want to solve for r Use the Division Property to get r by itself. 2 Simplify

  4. NOW YOU TRY!!! The equation for the distance traveled over time is given by the equation d = rt. Solve the equation for time. a.) r = dt b.) t = c.) t = rd d.) t = e.) dr = t f.) d – r = t

  5. NOW YOU TRY!!! The equation for the distance traveled over time is given by the equation d = rt. Solve the equation for time. d= rt Write the equation d= rt We want to solve for t Use the Division Property to get t by itself. r Simplify

  6. The formula to find the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2l + 2w. Chester is making a picture frame out of Cattails. If the Perimeter is 44 inches and the length is 13 inches, what is the width? P = 2l + 2w Write the formula Step 1: Isolate w . 13 in Isolate the w-term to solve for the width P = 2l + 2w Subtract 2l from both sides -2l -2l 2 P = 44 in P – 2l = 2w Divide by 2 simplify

  7. The formula to find the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2l + 2w. Chester is making a picture frame out of Cattails. If the Perimeter is 44 inches and the length is 13 inches, what is the width? Step 2: Plug in P & l 13 in Plug in Simplify P = 44 in = 9 in The width of the frame is 9 inches.

  8. NOW YOU TRY!!!! Find the height of the following triangle given the base and area. a.) h = 14 in b.) h = 7 in c.) h = 252 A = 42 in2 h 12 in e.) h = 6 in d.) h = 7 in f.) h = 6 in

  9. NOW YOU TRY!!!! Find the height of the following triangle given the base and area. Step 1: Isolate h from the formula for a triangle A = 42 in2 h Multiply by the reciprocal of ½ 12 in 2 b Divide by b simplify

  10. NOW YOU TRY!!!! Find the height of the following triangle given the base and area. Step 2: Plug in A = 42 in2 h 12 in simplify The height of the triangle is 7 inches

  11. YOUR LEVEL with 9-1a Literal Equations? a.) 0 – totally lost b.) 1 – with a lot of help I can get it c.) 2 – I need some help d.) 3 – I only need a tiny clarification e.) 4 – Zip It Mr. Wiz, I got this! Where are you????

  12. 9-1b Convert Temperatures MA.8.G.5.1 … Compare, contrast, and convert units of measure between different measurement systems (US customary or metric (SI)) and dimensions including temperature, area, volume, and derived units to solve problems. Learning Goals: -Convert temperature between Fahrenheit and Celsius

  13. You are in Europe by the Mediterranean Sea on the beach and the temperature reads 20 degrees Celsius. You want to know what it is in “American” Fahrenheit. a.) 99°F b.) 78°F c.) 68°F d.) not possible

  14. The European doctor on the phone wants to know what your baby’s temperature is in Celsius. You read 99° Fahrenheit on your thermometer. What do you tell the doctor? a.) 99°C b.) 37°C c.) 84°C d.) Dr. says baby will be fine if it eats pocket cheese

  15. Boiling & Freezing Points Temperature is a measure of hotness and coldness. It is measured in degrees. Fahrenheit is from the SI or Customary System and is what we use in the US. Celsius is from the metric system and is what most of the rest of the world uses The freezingpoint for water is 0° Celsius, which is the same as 32° Fahrenheit. The boilingpoint for water is 100° Celsius, which is the same as 212° Fahrenheit.

  16. Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion formula

  17. -13°C = ? °F Write the formula Plug in 30 for C simplify -13°C = 8.6°F Check your answer to see if it makes sense… notice that each measure is below freezing.

  18. NOW YOU TRY!!!! 30°C = ? °F a.) 86 b.) 90 c.) 111.6 d.) 30 e.) 62 f.) 84.3

  19. NOW YOU TRY!!!! 30°C = ? °F Write the formula Plug in 30 for C simplify 30°C = 86°F

  20. 56°F = ? °C Step 1: Isolate C -32 -32 Subtract 32 from each side Multiply by the reciprocal of simplify 30°C = 86°F

  21. 56°F = ? °C Step 2: Plug in simplify 56°F 13.3°C 30°C = 86°F

  22. NOW YOU TRY!!!! 10°F = ? °C a.) -14 b.) 14 c.) -21.6 d.) -26.4 e.) -6.7 f.) -12.8 30°C = 86°F

  23. NOW YOU TRY!!!! 10°F = ? °C Step 1: Isolate C -32 -32 Subtract 32 from each side Multiply by the reciprocal of simplify 30°C = 86°F

  24. NOW YOU TRY!!!! 10°F = ? °C Step 2: Plug in simplify 10°F -12.2°C 30°C = 86°F

  25. YOUR LEVEL with 9-1b Temperature Conversion? a.) 0 – totally lost b.) 1 – with a lot of help I can get it c.) 2 – I need some help d.) 3 – I only need a tiny clarification e.) 4 – Zip It Mr. Wiz, I got this! Where are you????
