  1. Little love notes… Your little brother has drawn this picture for your mum on Mother’s Day. Unfortunately he used your science homework as his canvas, luckily your homework was written in pencil. Discuss in pairs how you could remove the ink and save your homework.

  2. Distillation Aims: • to understand the process of distillation • to be able to name key pieces of the equipment • to be able to give examples of mixtures that require distillation for separation

  3. Saving the solvent distillation = evaporating the solvent and then condensing the vapour to form a liquid again When do we use distillation? • separation of a solvent from a solute • separation of two liquids that mix with each other

  4. Distillation apparatus thermometer Liebig condenser vapour round bottom flask mixture water out water in heat distillate conical flask

  5. How does distillation work? In your books write an explanation of how the apparatus is used to separate the 2 liquids. You will need to explanation how each piece of equipment is used and what its purpose is. Words to use: distillation, cold water, evaporates, evaporation, evaporates, lower, liquids, distillate, higher, heated, condenses, condenses, condensation, solvent, ethanol, heat, vapour, conical flask, miscible,

  6. Let’s do it! • Task: • Using a simplified distillation apparatus separate ink and water • Try to obtain both ink and water

  7. In your pairs try to come up with a procedure to save the ships’ crew You are stranded on the rocks of Bermuda in the ill-fated cruise liner “The Cats’ Miaow”. You have food, Wi-Fi (thank goodness!) and heat but you are running out of drinking water. Help is on its way but will arrive at least 1 week after your last drop of water… After searching the entire ship you manage to find: Funnels Filter papers Rubber tubing Clamp stands Burners Conical flasks Beakers White tiles Thermometers How do you know that you’ve got pure water? Can you obtain drinking water from the sea??

  8. Homework Congratulations! You managed to make drinking water from sea water. Now you have to tell the world of your achievement… You can tweet me @CLSGScience Send an email to wrights@clsg.org.uk Record a video of your “press conference” and upload to YouTube (then email me the link) Write an article for a survival magazine You can work individually or in groups
