  2. I have nothing to disclosure.

  3. Certification • Certification (Credentialing): • Measures, in a standardized and unbiased manner, the ability of the candidate to apply the knowledge and skills in the role of a professional. • Passing a certification establishes that the individual is minimally competent to work unsupervised in a given field or profession. • Certification does not mean that an individual knows everything required to be considered an expert in a given field. • Continuing Education: • Keeps the professional current by updating their knowledge base and teaching them new skills. • Frequently is associated with the development of a specialty. • May also be based on a specific modality or tool. • Assumes that the individual participating possesses all of the foundational knowledge required of the minimally competent professional. • Generally does not meet the threshold for credible certification for exam content, structure and administration. National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)

  5. Why do we certify who we certify? • New graduates • Need to assess the BASE knowledge deemed necessary to enter profession • Case load minimum • Two part exam • Pass rate for 1st time applicants of the: • Perfusion Basic Science Exam • ABCP • Clinical Applications in Perfusion Exam • ABCP

  6. Why do we pursue CE? • Keeps perfusion current • Does not lag due to validity • Updated at each meeting/day of issue • Presents evidence in peer reviewed format • Is specific to areas of interest/concern • Not areas deemed important by a committee

  7. Logistics • Would you propose two exams? • Pediatric and adult • How often would these be updated • Hospital impact • Time away from work = one CCP • Cost to take exam • Who pays • ABCP costs would have to increase

  8. Don’t be confused!!! • Don’t confuse: • Certified with Qualified • Recertification with Improved Quality • Experience, commitment, practice and involvement may = Quality Who do you want behind the pump for your procedure? Board certified or a quality outcomes driven tenured CCP?

  9. Conciderations • Legal implications? • Licensure • Consequences for failure, missing test?

  10. Conclusion • I hate to think what would happen if my pager went off at 9 years 12 months 30 days and 23 hours post my most recent certification… Legally, I would no longer be qualified to operate the bypass equipment when the patient was ready!!!! As bad as when we have to change our oxygenator after 6 hours!!

  11. Conclusion Perfusionists are some of the most dedicated individuals in the operating room. • Taking another exam will not improve this. • Increasing the CE requirement may increase our knowledge and improve our change/acceptance of change rate Finally, I can find no evidence to support the idea that recertification will improve our profession!!
