  1. Isotopes & Most Abundant Isotope. Jasmine Sudhu 5/30/13 Chemistry 10.

  2. What are Isotopes? • Isotope – Is the average mass of atoms. You round of the atomic mass to the nearest whole numbers to get your two possible Isotopes. • Example – Boron- Atomic mass = 10.81. After rounding to the closet two whole numbers which are 10 and 11, your Isotopes will be 10B & 11B • Example – Oxygen – Atomic mass = 15.999. After rounding to the closet two whole numbers which are 15 and 16, your Isotopes will be 15O & 16O

  3. Practice Problems! • If the Atomic Mass of Lithium is 6.941 What are the two possible Isoptopes?! • 6Li & 7Li !!! • If the Atomic Mass of Copper is 63.546 What are the two possible Isotopes?! • 63Cu & 64Cu!!!

  4. Most Abundant Isotope • The most abundant isotope has a mass closest to the atomic mass. • Example- Niobium, Nb – Atomic mass = 92.91 – isotopes = 92Nb & 93Nb- most abundant isotope is 93Nb because when you round 92.91 to the closet whole number it is close to 93 than 92. • Example- Carbon – Atomic mass = 12.011 – Isotopes = 12C & 13C – most abundant isotope is 12C because 12.011 is closer to 12 than 13.

  5. Practice Problems!!! • Fluorine – If the Isotopes are 18F & 19F and the Atomic mass is 18.998, which is the most abundant isotope? • Of course it will be 19F  • Iodine – If the Isotopes are 126I & 127I and the Atomic mass is 126.90, which is the most abundant isotope? • YOU GOT IT!!! 127I
