Risk Assessments and School Sport • Formal risk assessments must be untaken for out of the ordinary school activities ie excursions, weekly school sport where students leave the school, representative school sport activities. • Risk assessments are not new. What is new is the formalisation of such assessments. • Risk assessmentsare to formalise DET and teachers’ - “Duty of Care”

Risk Assessments and School Sport • Duty of Care - means to take reasonable care to avoid foreseeable risks. • All teachers need to be aware of the “Guidelines for the Safe Conduct of Sport and Physical Activity in Schools” which exist to inform staff and community members of standards and requirements for a wide range of activities and excursions. These guidelines are on the DET sport website (www.sports.det.nsw.edu.au).

Risk Assessments and School Sport Development of Risk Assessments relating to School Sport Always consider the following issues • Teacher / Instructor Qualifications • Supervision - including ratios / child protection / student welfare etc • Equipment – DET policy, current practice • Venue – possible hazards • Safety – activity rules • Other – travel arrangements, sun safe procedures, infectious diseases, accommodation etc.
