  1. Photovoltaic Panel Augmentation of Shuttle Power System Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure • Description • Photovoltaic panels incorporated into the Shuttle power system for improved safety, reliability, and performance, with reduced mass and volume • Photovoltaic panels provide significant increase in available power from the Shuttle power system • Photovoltaic panels provide significant shielding and cooling for the Shuttle • Photovoltaic panels can be combined with an ultracapacitor based energy storage system (as described in another proposal) to provide extremely high peak power levels • Technologies and Capabilities • Reduces peak power levels of Shuttle main power source • Provides shielding and cooling for Shuttle • High efficiency, exceeding 14% • Long shelf life • Long cycle life • Excellent low temperature characteristics • Provides significantly higher total power capability of Shuttle power system • Minimal support requirements • Promotes safety due to improved power system reliability • Maintenance free Benefits and Impacts Obsolescence Reduction Risk Reduction Safety Improvement Cost Reduction Process Improvement Other (Ultra-High Operations Improvement Reliability) Performance Enhancement • POC, Cost, Schedule and Maturity • TRL 9 • POC: Dennis Eichenberg (216)433-8360 • Directly derived from the design approach used for the International Space Station (ISS) Program • Photovoltaic panels have been tested successfully in conjunction with ultracapacitor energy storage • Reduction in Criticality 1 Failure Rate of 0.2%

  2. Photovoltaic Panel Augmentation of Shuttle Power System • Total Project Costs: $ 35 M • Obsolescence: $ 4 M • Feasibility: $ 3 M • Formulation: $ 5 M • Implementation: $ 23 M • A significant portion of the costs is attributed to certification and training (Code M) • Project Submitted By: Dennis Eichenberg, NASA GRC, (216)433-8360 • Note: Supplemental Information attached in MS Word document
