  1. UNIT 6 THE MIND

  2. EmotionalQuotient • One of the ways to measure a person’s ability to be successful in life. • It is often tied directly to the degree of success in the workplace and in personal relationships. • It includes competencies like empathy, intuition, creativity, flexibility, stress management, leadership, etc. • EQ gets you through life / IQ gets you through school.

  3. Listening ex. P 76 • Which groups of people did Peter Salovey and Martin Seligman use for their experiments? • FOUR-YEAR-OLDS AND INSURANCE SALESMEN • What did their experiments and studies seem to prove? • THE RESEARCH SHOWED THAT EQ IS AS IMPORTANT AS IQ WHEN DETERMINING SUCCESS. • SELF-CONTROL AS A YOUNG CHILD LED TO A HIGHER IQ AND GREATER SOCIAL CONFIDENCE IN ADOLESCENTS. • NATURALLY OPTIMISTIC SALESMEN PERFORMED BETTER AT WORK AND WERE LESS LIKELY TO LEAVE THEIR JOBS.

  4. SLEEP, p.82 • The amount of sleep a person needs depends on many factors, including age. For example, in general: • Infants require about 16 hours a day • Teenagers need about 9 hours on average • Most adults need 7 to 8 hours a night for the best amount of sleep, although some people may need as few as 5 hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep each day • Women in the first 3 months of pregnancy often need several more hours of sleep than usual.

  5. THE DANGERS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION Too little sleep may cause: • Memory problems • Mood swings / depression • A weakening of your immune system, increasing your chance of becoming sick • Trouble being focused / low performance at work • Lack of / poor coordination • Driver fatigue

  6. Goodadviceforpeoplewithinsomnia • Exercise often helps you sleep, but avoid exercising shortly before you go to bed. • A warm bath before bed can help. • Try not to eat large meals before bedtime. • Drinking alcohol may also disturb your night's sleep. • Cut down on drinks containing caffeine (coffee, tea, cocoa, and cola), especially late at night. • Make sure you have a comfortable bed. The bedroom itself should be well ventilated and cool and as dark and quiet as possible. • Don't go to bed until you feel tired.

  7. Sex just before bedtime can both promote and impede sleep. • Read a book until you feel dozy. Get up again if you are not able to sleep within half an hour. Sit down, read the paper, listen to some music and go back to bed half an hour later. • Get up at the same time every morning. Set the alarm and get out of bed quickly, even if you have had a late or sleepless night. This way, at the end of the day you'll probably feel tired and sleepy at just the right time. If you do this for a sufficient number of days, you will successfully adjust your inner clock and get tired when you need to. • For long trips by bus or plane, it might be worth taking a sleeping pill if you expect to have problems sleeping. This should be a fast-working pill with a limited effect - about five or six hours. You will need to consult your GP to get a prescription.

  8. Speaking, p79, ex1 • STRESS CAN RESULT IN: • PROBLEMS IN RELATIONSHIPS • POOR HEALTH • AN INCREASE IN THE USE OF SUBSTANCES SUCH AS ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO • ALTERED EATING HABITS • A DECREASE IN THE QUALITY OF WORK • PSHYCHOLOGICAL DIFFICULTIES

  9. WAYS TO RELIEVE STRESS • HAVING A BATH might help relax muscles and provide warmth and a pleasant smell. It can also leave you feeling fresher. • PAINTING and other creative hobbies demand concentration which takes your mind off work and other sources of stress. • LISTENING TO MUSIC, especially calm music, can take you away from the unpleasant noises and stresses of the world around you.

  10. WAYS TO RELIEVE STRESS • EXCERCISE might help people to relax by getting rid of surplus energy. • GOING ON HOLIDAY might people help to relax offering a change in environment and opportunities to do different things. • YOGA is said to decrease tension and make people more calm in their everyday lives.
