  2. Allegory-definition • An allegory is a story in which characters, settings, or actions stand for something beyond themselves.   4. Naguib Mahfouz: 1911-2006 THE BASICS • Name pronunced NAH-geeb MAH-fooz • Considered by many to be the most important 20th century novelist writing in Arabic--a father of the genre • Very prolific-- 45 novels & short stories, 30 screenplays & several plays

Naguib Mahfouz: 1911-2006 • Won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988--a first for author writing in Arabic--Committee praised his stories as applying “…to all mankind.” • Novels deal with controversial social and political topics--including the changing family roles in modern society & role of religion in modern society

Naguib Mahfouz: 1911-2006 • The Cairo Trilogy, (1957) follows 3 generations of an Egyptian family & explores Egyptian thought, attitudes, and social change from WWI until the 1952 coup that overthrew King Farouk • Children of the Alley (1959) was banned for a time in Egypt because of its controversial exploration of religion and characters based on Muhammad & Moses • Controversial writing led to an assassination attempt in 1994--Mahfouz survived
