  14. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Features of XEED SX50 multimedia projector The XEED SX50 is a multimedia projector that displays true high-resolution SXGA+ images, surpassing SXGA. To achieve this performance, the XEED SX50 incorporates LCOS reflective LCD panels, a next-generation image display device. The new AISYS optical system, a product of Canon's proprietary optical technology, was developed to precisely control light and maximize the capabilities of these LCOS reflective LCD panels. In addition, the XEED SX50 achieves a compact, lightweight body and economical price, surpassing expectations for conventional SXGA+ models. High-quality images • SXGA+ high-resolution • Seamless image display • High contrast High brightness • 2500 Lumens, comparable to high-brightness XGA models Compact, lightweight • Weighs just 3.9kg, comparable to mass-market models Economical • Price comparable to XGA models

  15. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Realistic photo reproduction The seamless images produced by LCOS reflective LCD panels result in superior reproduction of photos. Compared to images from a transmissive LCD projector, there is a noticeable difference in smoothness, and even metallic luster is reproduced realistically. Transmissive LCD projector XEED SX50 NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  16. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Seamless, lattice-free images produced by LCOS reflective LCD panels reproduce outstanding skin tones. Even when viewed close to the screen, the grid-like lattice pattern is minimal, resulting in smooth, natural-looking images. Transmissive LCD projector XEED SX50 NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  17. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Smooth, detailed moving images The XEED SX50 is compatible with a range of video signals, producing smooth moving images with a wealth of details. When viewed close to the screen, a transmissive LCD projector image appears as if a grid-like filter has been overlaid. The seamless images projected by the LCOS system do not show this grid, resulting in moving images that are smooth and clear, with a pleasing transparent appearance. Transmissive LCD projector XEED SX50 NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  18. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! SXGA+ performance displays 1.9 times the image volume of XGA The SXGA+ XEED SX50 displays 3.1 times the display area of SVGA; 1.9 times the area of XGA. With the ability to display large amounts of information, such as multiple PC windows, the XEED SX50 excels at presentations.

  19. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! SXGA+ resolution produces clear display of small text Compared to an XGA projector, the high-resolution SXGA+ XEED SX50 uses a greater number of dots to form each letter, displaying even very small text, which would be blurred by an XGA display, crisply and clearly. XEED SX50 Transmissive LCD projector NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  20. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Accurate display of fine lines The high-resolution XEED SX50 displays fine lines accurately and clearly. 21. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! High-resolution display of photos and moving images The high-resolution XEED SX50 excels at projecting moving images or photos. Accurate reproduction of fine details results in images with realistic depth and texture. XEED SX50 Transmissive LCD projector NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  22. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! High contrast produces realistic depth and dimension The high-contrast XEED SX50 reproduces crisp, black shadows. This, combined with finely detailed imaging ability of the high-definition panels, creates displays with a realistic appearance of depth and dimension. XEED SX50 Transmissive LCD projector NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  23. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Sophisticated color adjustment to meet users’ needs To meet the needs of demanding users, the XEED SX50 is equipped with a 6-axis color adjustment function. This function enables fine-tuned tone and contrast adjustments on both the RGB and CMY color axes.

  24. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Automatic gamma adjustment to suit the scene With dynamic gamma on, gamma is automatically adjusted to optimal values. This function minimizes washed-out whites and blocked-up blacks, providing optimum contrast balance even when projecting moving images with rapid shifts in brightness. Dynamic gamma 'on' (Simulation) With dynamic gamma on, gamma is adjusted according to the brightness of the scene, reproducing a tonal scale in the bright sections. With dynamic gamma on, gamma is adjusted to the overall scene, including shadowed areas, preventing blacks from blocking up. Dynamic gamma 'off' (Simulation)

  25. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Four preset image modes The image mode can be selected from four preset modes (standard, presentation, sRGB, and cinema) to suit the input signal: 'presentation' mode for PC presentations, 'cinema' mode for replaying moving images from a DVD, etc. Standard sRGB Optimized for sRGB output; reproduces data originating in this format. Produces images closely resembling the original, with an emphasis on white areas. NOTE: sRGB is an international standard default color space, as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Presentation Cinema Most suitable mode for projection of moving images; emphasizes gradation to produce realistic depth and dimension. When cinema mode is selected, the projector fan automatically switches to silent mode. Increases contrast between bright and dark areas to make it easier to see detailed diagrams and text often used in presentations.

  26. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! About sRGB sRGB is an international standard to unify color reproduction and color spaces that may differ according to the device or manufacturer, as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Depending on the manufacturer and the device, digital cameras, monitors, and other input and output devices have very different mechanisms for producing color. To minimize disparities and ensure accurate color mapping among a variety of output devices, a common range of color definitions has been standardized. When sRGB image mode is selected, the XEED SX50 accurately displays data and images produced according to sRGB standards. Color display range Visual range sRGB color range

  27. Introduction to XEED SX50 Confidential information! Memory color correction function Skies are blue, grass is green. . . people tend to remember colors as more vivid than they actually are. The XEED SX50 color memory mode offers three levels of emphasis, making it possible to display photos of landscapes and people in colors that resemble the colors as they are remembered. Memory color mode 'off' Memory color mode (strong) 'on' Blackboard display (post-correction) Screen color correction This color correction mode allows for display of images on blackboards often found in classroom settings. Images projected directly on the blackboard can be displayed in natural colors. Blackboard display (pre-correction)

  28. New technologies Confidential information! Characteristics of LCOS reflective LCD panels LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) reflective LCD panels utilized in the XEED SX50 are a next-generation image display device that produces seamless, lattice-free images. Cross-section of LCOS reflective LCD panel (LCOS = Liquid Crystal on Silicon) Cross-section of transmissive LCD panel LCOS LCD Liquid Crystal Liquid Crystal Reflective Mirror Liquid Crystal Drive Circuit Liquid Crystal Drive Circuit Because the drive circuit is positioned on the reverse side of the reflective mirror, virtually no light is blocked, producing smooth, lattice-free images. Because the drive circuit is positioned between the pixels, a portion of the light is blocked, projecting a grid-like lattice pattern on the screen. NOTE: For detailed explanation, refer to "Technology" section

  29. New technologies Confidential information! LCOS reflective LCD panels offer superior imaging characteristics. 1. Seamless, lattice-free images 2. High resolution from small panels 3. Superior display of moving images Comparison with other imaging systems * = Excellent = Good = Adequate *The newly developed AISYS optical system significantly boosts the level of contrast produced by LCOS reflective LCD panels.

  30. New technologies Confidential information! Superior display of moving images Thin liquid crystal layer produces moving images with minimal after-image. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is referred to as the “cell gap”. When images are displayed by liquid crystal, the narrower the cell gap, the higher the drive speed of the liquid crystal, resulting in superior display of moving images. Because light travels through the liquid crystal layer twice by bouncing off the reflective mirror, LCOS reflective LCD panels have a narrow cell gap, approximately half that of transmissive LCD panels. Thus, LCOS reflective LCD panels have a faster response, resulting in superior moving image display. Cell gap Cell gap Transmissive LCD panel LCOS reflective LCD

  31. New technologies Confidential information! New-concept AISYS optical system made possible by Canon's superior optical technology Based on a revolutionary concept unlike any optical system to date, Canon developed the new AISYS optical system to maximize the performance capabilities of the LCOS reflective LCD panels. AISYS makes it possible to project high-contrast images with the high definition and brightness that characterizes LCOS panels. The AISYS system is also responsible for the XEED SX50’s compact size, light weight, and low price. 32. New technologies Confidential information! Because parallel light enters the LCOS panels, the PBS can be made smaller Light at an angle enters the LCOS panels, so the size of the PBS increases A compact, lightweight projector The AISYS optical system not only maximizes the performance of LCOS reflective LCD panels, it also contributes to a significant reduction in projector size and weight. Because light in the horizontal direction is flattened for transmission to the PBS (Polarization Beam Splitter), the focal length can be shortened. This parallel light also makes it possible to use a smaller PBS. In addition, because light in the vertical direction is angled, it is possible to obtain a significant increase in brightness from a small projection lamp, eliminating the need for a large lamp such as used in conventional optical arrays. This shorter focal distance and reduction in size of the three PBS units and the projection lamp make possible a significant reduction in SXGA+ projector model size. 33. New technologies Confidential information! High-resolution, seamless, high-contrast Canon's newly developed AISYS optical system maximizes the high-quality imaging capabilities of the LCOS reflective LCD panels, achieving the optimum combination of brightness and high contrast that was previously difficult for LCOS projectors. Compared to transmissive LCD panels, LCOS reflective LCD panels produce seamless, lattice-free images and high-contrast crisp, sharp blacks. And despite its small size, the SX50 produces brightness of 2500 Lumens, a new dimension in projector performance. XEED SX50 (SXGA+) Transmissive LCD projector (XGA) High-resolution Reproduces filter facets in detail Seamless Realistic reproduction of metal texture High-contrast Black is crisp and sharp, accurately conveying the texture of the leather NOTE: Comparative visuals are simulated images.

  34. New technologies Confidential information! Compact and lightweight By incorporating the new AISYS system, the optical array can be made smaller, resulting in a compact, lightweight projector that produces SXGA+ high-resolution images. High-performance projection lens a product of Canon's optical expertise High resolution accurately reproduces high-definition SXGA+ images Minimizing aberrations throughout the zoom range, this lens produces high-quality images with no blurring or deviation of color. Aspherical Lenses 1.7x compact high-magnification zoom An optimal six-group, 12-lens configuration incorporating two high-definition aspherical lenses produces a slim and compact high-magnification 1.7x zoom lens. Bright images and superior color reproduction Lens glass has been optimized for high transmittance, producing bright images with excellent color balance. Reduction in ghosting and flares Superior lens coating minimizes reflected light, the primary cause of ghosting and flares. Adapts to projection environment Keystone correction adjustment of +/-20 degrees both vertically and horizontally compensates for distortions caused by projector placement. A tilt adjustment foot with spring enables user to adjust the angle of the body with one hand, making it easy to adapt the XEED SX50 to a variety of projection environments.

  36. New technologies Confidential information! Light reflected by lens surface (cause of ghosting and flare) Bright image with good color balance Screen Light from projected image When coating is not optimized, reflection from the lens surface causes ghosting and flare, which can affect image quality. Screen Light from projected image Optimized coating virtually eliminates reflection from the lens surface, resulting in bright, high-contrast images. 37. Confidential information! Let`s compare the image with an older Projector to see the difference. & Just play with the projector.

  38. Confidential information! Issues since product launch • Command codes. • Command codes were not supported in the first shipments. • Actually this was not planned to be included, but a lot of customers bought the product • thinking that the command codes were supported. This was obvious, because the previous • Canon projectors supported the command codes. Therefore Canon decided to produce a • firmware update specifically for this. • Because the previous models were actually not produced in-house, also the command codes • were different. Because of that also the customer had to use different codes, compared with • the previous models. Where the previous models used Hexadecimal codes, the SX50 uses • codes like “Power ON”. Tomorrow during the firmware update procedure we will also handle • the various procedures used to check whether the command codes are working. • Dust issue • This issue is the biggest problem that needed to be tackled. • First we discovered that when a new projector was used for not even an hour some • particles could be seen if you knew how to look for them. When focusing on the particles, • the smallest particles could be seen. When focusing on the projected image these small • particles cannot be seen. In some time, bigger particles could be seen that could also be • seen when focused on the projected image. These bigger particles will cause the customers • to complain. In the earlier models it was just a matter of time for these bigger particles to • appear. • The particles come from outside of the projector. In the beginning also from the factory • some particles were inside the projector that would end up on the LCOS panel.

  39. Confidential information! In the beginning it was discovered that the metal paint on the inside of the external Covers could easily come off, when only using a cotton swab. After investigation of the material found on the LCOS panels, the conclusion was that it was an organic polyamide, which for example can be found in skin. a. Dust came in through the respirator area (where the clip is to open the cover). An extra filter was added. b. Also the fan dust was coated in the inside with a sticky surface. This will prevent the dust from reaching the LCOS panel if it gets to the Fan duct. c. The Green en Red LCOS panel got an extra shield, between the LCOS panel and the Prisms. This will prevent the dust from reaching the LCOS panels. Due to technical restrictions, it was not possible to also shield off the Blue LCOS panel., Luckely this is the least affected color and also the least visible color concerning details. With the fully modified projector a test was done over 24hours together with a modified version without the final modification (LCOS shielding). The difference was huge. Green and red didn`t get any dust particles. Only one very small particle was added in the blue LCOS panel. In the other projector several particles were added during the test (around 10, not all big ones).

  40. Confidential information! • Pin-cushion distortion. • The pin-cushion distortion can be seen is only on the top side. • (Explain with drawings) • This is a product limitation. If a customer complains about this issue, please say it • is a product limitation. • This issue came up from Marketings side for a big customer, so as an exeption • Canon inc. made a special lens for correction to put in front of the projectors lens. Issues concerning firmware updates will be handled tomorrow.(including command codes)

  41. Confidential information! Disassemble & assemble the unit We wanted to fully modify an SX50, but unfortunately Canon inc. shipped out the wrong parts to us. • Notice the metal paint on the inside of the external covers. • This paint exist out of very small metal particles that will come off when scrubbed/touched. • Please be carefull with this when disassebling/assembling the device. • Please make sure to have seen all current Service Bulletines for the SX50, before repairing.

  42. Confidential information! Day 2 Brief explanation of electric circuit • Adjustments FS, Vcom and Color correction are all done in the factory. These adjustments are transfered to the new mainboard by means of EEPROM Data transfer. If the data from the old pcb is lost, please use the data files that can be found On the TSS site for each individual product according to the serialnumber. D/A gain adjustment => if this is not good, vertical lines with 8 pixels in between will be seen. The D/A gain is not included in the EEPROM Data transfer. • Error checklist • Block diagram • Fan control specifications & troubleshooting • Power Supply and Protection Circuits diagram Also see the paper documents concerning : 1. display types, LCD projector structure, LCD projector components, Reflection type lcd projector optical system and Canon LCD projector optical system. 2. schematic diagram explanation 1-3, 2-3 and 3-3.

  43. Confidential information! Firmware updates In the projector 2 locations can be found where firmware version can be changed. These locations are H8 (System Microcomputer) and PW (Pixel Works, controls images). H8 takes care of : 1. Safety circuit, 2. On/Off, 3. Temperature control, 4. Fan control PW controls images. Command Codes + bug fixes(7) 5 issues V 1.0000 => V 01.0202 => V 01.0303 => V 01.0403 PW & H8 PW & H8 PW only!!! Because for the latest firmware version only the PW is changed, please keep in mind that when you update a projector that contains V 1.0000 or V 01.0202 to first do the update of V 01.0303 , before doing V 01.0403. (V01.0403 => 01 is the mainboard version, 04 is the PW version, 03 is the H8 version) Let`s go through one of the firmware updating procedures. Any volunteers??

  46. Confidential information! General information on projectors, lamps, pixelflair • General confidential information on projector • General lamp information • Pixel Flair From Canon inc. we actualy got the following procedure to check the amount of Pixel Flair: 1. First measure according to the pixel flair-document above. 2. If not sure about the amount of pixel flair, please project the “fullscreen”-chart. 3. If still not sure, project an xls-sheet with all zeros. If after all these steps you still don`t think it is OK, please try to repair the product. The pixel flair issue mainly occurred in the LV-72xx series. During the training it was shown exactly what an OK product looks like(LV72xx series). Also use this experience when trying to find out if the product is within or outside of the Specifications. During the training Marc Masson (RCC France) came with the issue that something is not right with the lens (the part on which it is mounted). If the front of the lens is slightly pressed on the correct location unsharpness in the corners are totally corrected. We will further Investigate this issue and come back to it.
