  1. MODERNISM

  2. Modernism is a rejection of the values of the Enlightenment and the neoclassicist movement. • Where the neoclassicists emphasized objective truth through reason, the modernists value subjective truth and emotion. • This alternative value system leads to a rearrangement of classic forms. This can be seen through the restructuring of the narrative structure in The Sun Also Rises. Modernism

  3. The overall structure of The Sun Also Rises is what makes it unique. Hemingway cuts out what we expect from a traditional exposition –rising action- climax – resolution format to create a work that is a nuanced and unique portrait of a character. Modernism

  4. Juxtaposition of themes, images, events, and anecdotes all add to the overall impression created by the work. Modernism

  5. Hemingway allows the characters to speak for themselves through dialogue with minimal narrative intrusion. When the narrator does speak it enhances our understanding of the character. The events of the story are not reflected, but told in a straightforward and understated manner. Is Jake a reliable narrator? Modernism

  6. Like the structural differences in the composition of a painting… The Sun Also Rises is a composite of familiar things arranged in a new way. Hemingway assumes that we, as an audience, will fill in many of the missing portions of the narrative. Modernism

  7. Modernism These are two different representations of the same subject matter. Nusch Eluard was poet Paul Eluard’s wife and the subsequent subject of Man Ray’s photograph, and Pablo Picasso’s painting. Modernism does not prescribe a certain form… only that the form be new.

  8. Modernism These are two different representations of the same subject matter. This is poet Paul Eluard. New insights into reality can be created by viewing familiar things through a different perspective.

  9. Modernism “Art is a lie which helps us see the truth.” Pablo Picasso
