  2. What a friction? • A friction is a force that resists motion. • Ex. If you shove a book to make it slide across a tabletop, the force of the shove must be great enough to overcome frictional resistance.

  3. We commonly think of friction as a hindrance to work and motion. • When we try to move an object, the force of friction opposes the motion of the object. • Friction allows us to walk. • Without the friction between our shoes and the walking surface, we would slip and slide.

  4. Friction can also be a very desirable force. • Car tires have irregular surfaces that increase their friction with the road.
