Background • What were some of the events that led up to the Battle of Lexington & Concord? • Stamp Act, Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre • The Second Continental Congress meets to discuss the possibility of War with England, there are many decisions to be made. • A General is needed for the American army, who will it be?
George Washington • May 1775 Second Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia. • Washington, one of the Virginia delegates, was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. • On July 3, 1775, he took command of his ill-trained troops and embarked upon a war that was to last six grueling years. The earliest authenticated portrait of George Washington shows him wearing his colonel's uniform of the Virginia Regiment from the French and Indian War. However, this portrait was painted years after the war in 1772.
The Fighting Begins • The first major battles of the war occur near two hills outside of Boston • Bunker & Breeds • No one in Boston knows that George Washington is their commander. • We WILL NOT study every single battle of the Revolution. • We WILL be studying MAJOR turning points in our quest for American Victory.
