Overall Information • One of the most ancient people of Central Asia • Territory 198 500 km². 94 % of the whole territory is mountainous • Population5.6 mln • Capital – Bishkek (more than 900 000 citizens) • Ethnic groups: Kyrgyz (72%), Uzbek (14%), Russian (9%) • Languages: Kyrgyz and Russian • The most democratic and market-oriented country in Central Asia. • Religion: Islam • Former member of USSR, today is member of WTO and Customs Union. • Trade partners: Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Germany, China, Turkey, the United States, and Korea. • Major exports: precious metals, power resources, tobacco, and cotton • Major imports: fuel and energy, commodity goods, equipment, and machinery.

Culture • Tajik folks are very hospitality, gracious, friendly • Hospitality, humility, and respect are considered essential for successful interaction in tajik culture. • Showing some familiarities with the country, language, history, geography and literature always makes a good impression and will open up a window for trust and good relations. • Humor is particularly used at the table during meals only when relationships are well developed.
