  1. Descriptive Cataloging of Monographs 2. ToolsDRAFT Unit 2

  2. Anglo-American Cataloging Rules • Derive from ALA Cataloging Rules and Rules for Descriptive Cataloging (1949) • First edition of AACR published 1967 • 1st ed. does not use ISBD • Major revision with AACR 2nd ed. (1978) • Incorporates ISBD (used since 1974) • Major rule changes for choice and form of entry Unit 2

  3. AACR2 revisions • Continuing practice of citing as AACR2, despite revisions since 1978 • Significant revisions of the 2nd edition occurred in 1988, 1998, 2002, along with minor revisions issued in the intervening years • Expected to be replaced by Resource Description and Access (RDA) ca. 2010 Unit 2

  4. Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs) • Extensive interpretation of AACR2 rules for LC and PCC catalogers • Default guidelines for non-PCC cataloging, e.g. OCLC cataloging and non-pcc YUL cataloging • Basis for NACO decisions for form of entry & references • Updates quarterly • Also includes • Decisions on optional rules in AACR2 • Documentation of LC practices deviating from AACR2 Unit 2

  5. YUL Cataloging & LCRIs • YUL catalogers are expected to follow the rule interpretations (PCC/NACO requirement; YUL policy should not be in conflict) • YUL catalogers are allowed to follow LC practices on a case by case basis; YUL policy overrides LC practice Unit 2

  6. OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards • LINK:http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/about/ • OCLC cataloging is expected to follow AACR2 and the LCRIs (BF&S will indicate where OCLC deviates from the LCRIs) • Example: BF&S has a broader definition of a copy Unit 2

  7. OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards & Orbis Cataloging • Greater impact for those who catalog directly on Connexion (non-roman script cataloging) • Orbis cataloging: use primarily for interpretation of MARC 21, including fixed fields • OCLC MARC differs from standard MARC 21; some translation is necessary when applying to Voyager • Encoding Level: Orbis original cataloging does not use Level i or Level k (non-roman cataloging uses Level i) • OCLC MARC does not display $a: BF&S does not use $a in its examples; Voyager $a displays Unit 2

  8. Local Policies & Documentation (1) • Local policies for YUL core • Checklisthttp://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/Orbis2Manual/coreyalechecklist.htm • Cheat Sheethttp://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/Orbis2Manual/COREcheat.doc • Local policies for Authority Control workflow • CAUTION: workflow for original cataloging differs from copy cataloging workflow • Authority Control Workflow for Catalog Librarianshttp://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/authorities/acworkflow.htm Unit 2

  9. Local Policies & Documentation (2) • Local policies for series (tracing, classed together or classed separately)http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/documentation/seriescatworkflow.htm • Added copies (what is a copy)http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/Orbis2Manual/addedcopyscope.htm • Multipart monograph guidelineshttp://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/Orbis2Manual/multipartworkflow.htm Unit 2

  10. Authority Control • Authority control in Orbis • Validation Function • Validation Window • Only validates if an authority record is in Orbis; complete authority file is NOT in Orbis • Available (complete) authority files: • LCDB (use Staff searches; use macros for rapid selection of search indexes; Orbis validation function cannot be used; no time out) • OCLC (no charge; browse indexes; short time out unless you use a NACO account) • LC Online Authority File (the most up-to-date, very short time out) Unit 2

  11. Cataloger’s Desktop • LINK:http://desktop.loc.gov/ • Access to AACR2 • Access to LCRIs • Links from AACR2 to LCRIs and vice versa • Links to MARC documentation but not to OCLC BF&S • Updated quarterly • Bookmark option for heavily used sections • Browse and Searching features Unit 2

  12. Organization of AACR2: Pt. 1 • Part 1: Description • Chapter 1. Basic descriptive rules • Chapter 2. Descriptive rules for books • Each chapter is organized by ISBD area (next session) • IMPORTANT. Anything previously covered in Chapter 1 will not necessarily be reiterated in Chapter 2. (Chapter 2 is only supposed to cover those elements specific to books) • IMPORTANT. Watch out for further elaboration via the LCRI link! Unit 2

  13. Organization of AACR2: Pt. 2 • Part 2. Choice and form of entry. • Chapter 21. Choice of Access Points • How to determine the main entry • What added entries to make • Chapters 22-25. Diacritics & Macro Express • Heavily used diacritics are mapped to the number pad (Num Lock must be on: green) [to use the pad for numbers: Ctrl <number pad> 5] • Additional diacritics are on a menu screen evoked by pressing F12 • If a diacritic is not on the pad or F12, it has been mapped to the keyboard; consult the table on the Macro Express at Yale page • Remember!
