  7. Respiratory acidosis • Treat by using oxygen therapy • Oxygen therapy shown to reduce pulmonary hypertension in some patients • Ventilatory support such as endotracheal intubation with mechanical ventilation and noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV) techniques • Surgical intervention on patients with severe condition • Pharmacologic therapy (bronchodilating agents, respiratory stimulants, drug antagonists and bicarbonate infusion)

  8. Respiratory alkalosis • Treatment of respiratory alkalosis is primarily directed at correcting the underlying disorder. • Because respiratory alkalosis usually occurs in response to some stimulus, treatment is usually unsuccessful unless the stimulus is controlled. • Rebreathinginto a paper bag during acute episodes, by rebreathing the air that was exhaled, the patient will inhale a higher amount of carbon dioxide than he or she would normally and treatment for underlying psychological stress • Beta-adrenergic blockers may help control the manifestations of the hyper adrenergic state that can lead to hyperventilation syndrome in some patients
