  2. Reconstruction Begins • Lasted from 1865- 1877 • South needed to rebuild a new society without slavery • Reconstruction- process of readmitting Confederate states to the Union

  3. President Lincoln • Planned to pardon Confederate officials • Planned to let Confederate states quickly form new governments and send representatives to Congress • Established Freedmen’s Bureau to set up schools and hospitals for former slaves.

  4. President Johnson • Insisted Southern states approve 13th amendment and accept supreme power of Federal Government • Pardoned white Southerners and returned property in exchange for pledge of loyalty to U.S.

  5. Southern State Governments • Refused to approve 13th amendment • Passed black codes to limit the freedom of former slaves: • Couldn’t carry guns • Couldn’t meet unsupervised • Would be put to work if they didn’t have proof of employment

  6. Radical Republicans • Wanted federal government to remake the south • Demanded full and equal citizenship for African Americans • Aimed to destroy the south’s old ruling class • Wanted small farms, free schools, respect for labor, and political equality in the south
