  5. Definition of Justification What justification is not: 1. Acquitted -successfully defend oneself 2. Pardoned -found guilty but given a second chance 3. Paroled -guilty but set free with restriction

  6. Definition of Justification What justification is: 1. A state of being • VOID of OFFENSE toward God • Declared NOT GUILTY in Christ Jesus • Pronounced RIGHTEOUS

  7. Definition of Justification What justification is: 2. As an act • the work of God by which He forgives our sins • changes our relationship with Him from one of enmity to one of friendship

  8. Two-fold Nature of Justification 1.Sins are FORGIVEN; guilt and punishment are CANCELLED OUT (Romans 6:23) Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  9. Two-fold Nature of Justification 2. We are RECONCILED to God (Romans 5:10-11) Romans 5:10-11, “For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!.”

  10. Two-fold Nature of Justification 2. We are RECONCILED to God (Romans 5:10-11) Romans 5:10-11, “11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

  11. B. SANCTIFICATION Definition of Sanctification 1. “Hiagos”-meaning holy 2. Purification-separated from the sin nature and dedicated to God

  12. Implications of Sanctification (Romans 8:9-11): 1. CONTROLLED by the SPIRIT andnot by the SINFUL nature (v. 9) Romans 8:9, “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”

  13. Implications of Sanctification (Romans 8:9-11): 2.Our Spirit will LIVE and not DIE (v. 10) Romans 8:10, “But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”

  14. Implications of Sanctification (Romans 8:9-11): 2.Have hope of RESSURECTION (v.11) Romans 8:11, “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.”

  15. C. ADOPTION Definition • The DECLARATORY act of God by which we are received into the family of God and reinstated in the privileges of sonship (Illustration: Luke 15:23)

  16. C. ADOPTION Benefits of Adoption 1.We have been given the Spirit of SONSHIP Romans 8:15a, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.”

  17. C. ADOPTION Benefits of Adoption 2. We can call God “ABBA FATHER” Romans 8:15b, ‘And by him we cry, "Abba, Father.“’

  18. C. ADOPTION Benefits of Adoption 3.We have the Spirit’s TESTIMONY (v. 16) Romans 8:16, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.”

  19. C. ADOPTION Benefits of Adoption 4. We become HEIRS of God and CO-HEIRS with Christ (v. 17) Romans 8:17, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

  20. CONCLUSION Justification, sanctification, and adoption are different aspects of the same work of GRACE. They all occur at the same time and are part of the NEW BIRTH experience.

  21. CONCLUSION • In justification, God declares the sinner (that’s YOU) RIGHTEOUS admitting him to RECONCILIATION and PEACE; • In sanctification, he (that’s YOU) is SET APART and DEDICATED to God; and

  22. CONCLUSION • In adoption, the JUSTIFIED and SANCTIFIED believer (that’s YOU again) is RECEIVED into the family of God.

  23. CONCLUSION John 1:12 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-

  24. Assignment: 1. What then is our view of death? Are we afraid to die? Also, how much importance do we give our body and our spirit? What takes priority? 2. How real is the hope of resurrection for us? Are we living as if this is all there is in life? Are we looking forward to eternal life in Christ?
