  3. The City of Tampere • Founded 1779 • Today over 200 000 inhabitants (of which slightly over a half are women) • An industrial city situated between two lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi • Sometimes referred as the Manchester of Finland, ”Manse” • The capital of shoe and textil industry in Finland

  4. Finlayson – a cotton factory founded 1820 Since 1995 serves as a culture district and a meeting place

  5. Tampella – linen mill and machine workshops founded 1856 Today Museum Centre Vapriikki

  6. The University City • Universities • University of Tampere • Tampere Technical University (in Hervanta, ”Herwood”) • Polytechnics • Tampere Polytechnic • Pirkanmaa Polytechnic

  7. The Sauna City Rauhaniemen kansankylpylä, Beach and Public Saunas Rajaportin Sauna, started in 1906, is the oldest public sauna in Finland that is still in use.

  8. The Music City Tampere is well known for great rock music. A big festival, Tammerfest, is organized every July with over 100 names playing. Sauna Open Air Metal Festival Lordi in Tammerfest 2003

  9. The 26th International Tampere Jazz Happening will be organizedthis year 2007 Tampere Flamenco Week Burnt Sugar, The Arkestra Chamber Other events: -The Tampere Biennale -Tampereen Sävel – The Tampere Vocal Music Festival. And many gigs all over the city every day!

  10. The Theatre City The 37th International Short Film Festival took place in Tampere on March 2007. The biggest theatres are: -Tampereen Teatteri (Tampere Theatre) -Tampereen Työväen Teatteri (The Only Professional Workers Theatre) -Pyynikin kesäteatteri (Pyynikki Summer Theatre) There are about 20 bigger or smaller theatres in the city.

  11. The Sport City There are two big ice hockey teams in Tampere... Tappara Ilves Tappara – Ilves, 17.10.2006, 5-2 ...and a football club Tampere United.

  12. You can do various things in Tampere both in the summer and winter time: Go ice-skating...

  13. ...fly with a hot air balloon... ...go ice swimming... ...go sailing... ...walk on the ice...
