  10. Dear Valley Ranch Star Savers Employees: Thank you for all your hard work this year at the Star Savers Bank! Your school has already saved $6,070.26 this year! We are glad you have taken responsibility for saving your money in your accounts. It is obvious that you understand the importance of saving money and spending wisely. Each year, our credit union uses our math skills to adopt “angels” from the Salvation Army Angel Tree in Irving. Since you are great mathematicians, your teachers thought you could use your skills to adopt families for your school. Your teachers would like to select a group in each class that could spend wisely and budget their money to purchase items for our adopted angel families. In order to select one group from each class, we have created a hypothetical situation where each group will receive a needy family’s wants and needs. The groups will each get $300.00 to purchase items requested from the family. In your group, you will research stores online and in paper ads to find the best deal for the items requested. Your group will be designing a budget using Google Apps spreadsheets to create a budget list of all items. You will also need to total the cost of each individual family member, and determine the final cost for the entire family. Although we know you can find great deals using coupons, no group is permitted to do so because of expiration dates and a limited selection of stores. Because your school is a non-profit organization, we have a tax exempt form and do not need you to calculate the tax for your purchases. The Irving Chamber of Commerce, Gold’s Gym, Volunteers of America, Mortgages USA, and our Credit Union are looking forward to seeing everyone’s final multimedia product for their adopted family on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. We will select one group per class to do the actual shopping for a local needy family. I hope you can apply your math, technology, and banking skills to use money skillfully while providing all the best products for your family.
