  1. REDWALLby Brian Jacques By Shaumik Phadke

  2. About the Author • The Author of this story is Brian Jacques • He was born in Liverpool, England June 15, 1939 • When he was ten years old he showed a knack for writing. • Some other books he has written are Mattimeo, Castaways of the Flying Dutchman, Mariel of Redwall, and many, many more.

  3. Setting • The main two settings of this story are Redwall Abbey, where Matthias lives, and the Sandstone quarry, where Matthias has to get the sword of Martin the Warrior from Asmodeus.

  4. Characters • Matthias- A young mouse who was once little and foolish who becomes a great warrior. • Cluny the Scourge- An evil barbaric rat who has a barbed tail and wants to take over Redwall. • Abbot Mortimer- The ruler of Redwall, commonly referred to as Father Abbot. • Methuselah- An old wise mouse who teaches Matthais many things. • Constance- A huge badger who Cluny hates and is a part of Redwall.

  5. Plot • In the beginning of the story when Matthias and Constance are pulling the Chruchmouse family in a cart, they see Cluny the Scourge but he doesn’t see them because they swerve out of the way. • When Cluny the Scourge sends Shadow to steal the tapestry from Redwall

  6. Plot (continued) • When Jess Squirrel and Basil Stag Hare steal the tapestry back from Cluny the Scourge. • Matthias, meanwhile is venturing in the attics and finds the sparrows nesting area and tries to get Martin the warriors sword from them because he thinks they have it. When one sparrow tells him a giant Snake took it, so all Matthias takes then, is a sword case. • He then travels to Captain Snow, the owl to ask him where the snake is, who is named Asmodeus . Captain Snow tells him he is in the sandstone quarry.

  7. Plot (continued) • While Matthias is doing that, Cluny the Scourge has taken over redwall, and Matthias is their only hope. Soon after this Matthias comes back with an army of shrews and sparrows to get control of redwall back. Matthias ends up killing Cluny by crushing him with a giant bell.

  8. Conflict/Resolution • The main conflict is Redwall vs. Cluny the Scourge and his hordes. Redwall is a peaceful group of mice, while Cluny is an evil rat who wants to take over it. • The resolution is when Matthias comes back with the Sword of Martin the warrior and a group of Sparrows and Shrews to take back redwall. Matthias then kills Cluny by cutting the rope that held the bell up, which caused it to fall on Cluny.

  9. Theme • The theme of this story is to never lose hope. When Captain Snow tells Matthias that Asmodeus is impossible to beat, Matthias didn’t believe that and when he tried to do it he succeeded. Also when he saw the sight of all his fellow redwallers captured he didn’t lose hope and he freed all of them and killed Cluny.

  10. Personal book review • I thought this book was very nice. It had many great qualities, and it had me excited to the very end. Overall I would say it is 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to 9 to 14 year olds. I would probably recommend this book to a friend. That is my review on this fantastic book.
