  2. Roots • Dict, Dic, Dit = Speak, Declare • Ven, Vent = Come • Duct, Duc = Lead

Dict, Dic, Dit • Abdicate- To give up or renounce duties or high office, etc. in a public, voluntary or formal manner • Addicted- Causing to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on a substance • Edict- A decree issued by a sovereign or other authority; any authoritative command • Malediction-A prayer for harm to befall someone: a curse; evil words spoken against an individual; an imprecation

Ven, Vent • Advent- First or new appearance; a start; a penitential season beginning four Sundays before Christmas (capitalized) • Circumvent- To go around or bypass; to avoid by artfulness; to elude • Covenant- A formal agreement of legal validity or a conditional pledge or promise • Intervene- To come between disputing people or groups; to intercede or mediate

Duct, Duc • Conducive- Tending to lead to or to cause to bring about; contributive; helpful • Ducats- Any of several gold coins formerly issued in various parts of Europe • Inducement- Something that leads or moves by persuasion or influence to some action or state of mind; incentive • Seductive- Tending to lead astray from duties or accepted principles; enticing; alluring

  6. Your assignment • Complete the fill-in-the-blank handouts with the vocabulary lists provided. Remember to focus on the roots, as well as the whole word. • Puzzle #2 uses only words that utilize the roots dictand dic. • Your homework (due Wednesday): Create 24 fill-in-the-blank sentences using the remaining roots. • 10 sentences will be dedicated to words that use ven and vents. • Find 10 words that include the root, and then create a sentence for those words. • 10 sentences will be dedicated to words that use duct and duc.

  9. Week 2 Roots • FIN = end • SED, SID, SESS = sit, be still • FER = bear, carry, yield, bring.

FIN • Affinity: a person, thing, idea, etc., for which such a natural liking or attraction is felt. • Definitive: most reliable or complete, as of a text, author, criticism, study, or the like • Finesse: extreme delicacy or subtlety in action, performance, skill, discrimination, taste, etc. • Infinitesimal: indefinitely or exceedingly small; minute

SED, SID, SESS • Assiduous: constant in application or effort; working diligently at a task; persevering; industrious; attentive • Dissident: A person who’s opinion differs from the majority • Insidious: Intended to entrap or beguile; stealthily treacherous or deceitful • Sedentary: accustomed to sit or rest a great deal or to take little exercise.

  12. FER • Conferred: to consult together; compare opinions; carry on a discussion or deliberation. • Deferential: Showing respect for the opinion or judgment of another • Insufferable: not to be endured; intolerable; unbearable • Vociferous: crying out noisily; clamorous

  17. Week 4 • Latin Roots • GRAD/GRESS = step, walk, degree • MOB/MOT/MOV = move • CAS/CID = fall, sink:

  18. Grad/Gress – step, walk, degree • Degradation – the state of being reduced in quality or value • Gradient – the degree of inclination; an inclined surface; grade; ramp. • Regressive – tending to move backwards; revert to earlier times • Transgression – violation of a law, command, etc.

Mob, Mot, Mov - move • Demotion - to reduce to a lower grade, rank, class, or position • Motif - a recurring subject, theme, idea, etc., especially in a literary, artistic, or musical work. • Mobilization – The act of assembling (armed forces, military reserves) into readiness for active service. • Momentum - force or speed of movement; impetus, as of a physical object or course of events

CAS/CID – fall or sink • Deciduous - falling off or shed at a particular season, stage of growth, etc., as leaves, horns, or teeth. • Occidental - pertaining to, or characteristic of the Western Hemisphere or its natives and inhabitants • Recidivism - repeated or habitual relapse, as into crime. • Decadent – unrestrained or excessive self-indulgence

Sequ/Secu - follow • Inconsequential - Having little or no importance; lacking in significance; trivial • Persecute - To subject to harassing or cruel treatment; to oppress • Secondary - Next after the first in order, rank or time; of lesser importance; not primary or original • Sequel - An event that follows or comes afterward; a work (novel or movie) that continues a story already begun

Nasc/Nat – Be born • Cognate - Descended from the same language; related by birth; of the same parentage or descent • Naïve - Showing a lack of experience, judgment or information; having unaffected simplicity of nature • Nationality - People having a common origin, tradition, language and capability of forming a state; an ethnic group • Supernatural - Being above or beyond what is explainable by natural law; attributed to ghosts and goblins

Tra/Tract – pull or draw • Abstract - Thoughts not part of concrete realities, specific objectives, or actual instances • Distraction - The act of drawing away or diverting; a person or thing that prevents concentration • Portrayal - Act of making a likeness by drawing, carving, etc.; representing dramatically, as on the stage • Protracted- Drawing out or lengthening, esp. in time; prolonged
