  1. Do you recognize this? Think about it.(Shhhh, don’t tell if you know!) Paddle, propel, maneuver your vessel,Softly glide in stride with the currentZestfully, gleefully, ecstatically, blissfully,Our existence is fleeting.

  2. What happened to that nursery rhyme?

  3. Use the thesaurus and your brain! What did I do? Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream.

  4. Row, row, row Instead of row, row, row I thought of paddle:

  5. Paddle, propel, ______________ How about move? Boring!

  6. boat Words for boat:

  7. gently down the stream gently = softly What about down the stream?

  8. Gently down the stream What does “moving down the stream” really mean? Go south? Move toward the bottom? So, . . . Gently move toward the bottom? Gently go south? NOPE! Moving along the current

  9. Gently down the streamSoftly move along the current If I use ‘move,’ what is a more graceful or gentle way to say move? GLIDE If I am moving along, I am in stride. Softly glide in stride with the current

  10. MERRILY x 4 Change them all!

  11. MERRILY x 4

  12. MERRILY x 4 zestfully, gleefully, ecstatically, blissfully,

  13. Life is but a dream I thought about what this means . .. I determined that the nursery rhyme meant that life goes fast or passes like a dream. Enjoy it! Life = existence Our existence is passing by fast I looked up “passing” and found fleeting

  14. Paddle, propel, maneuver your vessel,Softly glide in stride with the currentZestfully, gleefully, ecstatically, blissfully,Our existence is fleeting.

  15. Hints • Change the words, but do not change the meaning of the nursery rhyme. Example: “Row, row, row your boat” should not turn into steering a rocket through space and end with life being miserable. It needs to remain true to the original rhyme. Steer, operate, navigate the rocket Nervously through space Masterfully, adroitly, expertly, proficiently, Living can sure be a hardship.

  16. HINTS • Stay true to the tone. Think of our audience. Yes, nursery rhymes are meant for children. In this case, however, let’s write for our audience in this classroom. Avoid overly-sophisticated and slang words. Gallivant, meander, peregrinate the barque Languidly follow the tributary’s course Fundamentally, exuberantly, vivaciously Our vitality is transient. Move, go, get your boat outta here, Be smooth goin’ south on the river, Sick, awesome, choice, epic, YOLO

  17. Hint Please do not just find a word and replace it. Does it fit? Do you know what it means? Does it make sense? Does it flow? The dog walked home. Hound promenade neck of the woods. The hound trots to his neck of the woods. Warning: You may have to think!

  18. What’s next? • I am going to assign you a nursery rhyme • Use the thesaurus links on my website, WORD or on google docs • Write your new creation on Google Docs • Do not write the original title. • If you finish early, make it pretty! • Share with me at Wilmette39.
