Grizzly Get Started • On a blank piece of paper of VOCAB SECTION in your Content Notebook write today’s date on the top right. • Write the following word along with it’s definition and examples. • Morpheme • Definition: a morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in a word, including prefixes, root or base words, and suffixes. • Examples: • Reader: 2 morphemes = (read) + (er) • Telephone: 2 morphemes = (tele) + (phone) • How many morphemes does the word HOPEFULL have?   3. Grizzly Get Started In your CONTENT NOTEBOOK underneath the activity from 8/21/13, write today’s date on the right handside: Copy the following: COMPOUND WORD = a word that contains more than one word. Example = whiteboard, doghouse, woodpecker

  4. Grizzly Get Started- Word Class • In the VOCAB SECTION in your your CONTENT NOTEBOOK, write today’s date in the upper right corner and the title WORD CLASS. Write the following definitions: • Verb – an action (ex. RUN) • Abverb – tells how the action is done (ex. Run QUICKLY) • Noun – a person place or thing (Run quickly to the CAR) • Adjective – describes the noun (Run quickly to the RED car) • Identify the words in the following sentence as a VERB, NOUN, ADVERB or ADJECTIVE. Carefully sweep the broken glass. • Example: • The big boy jumped excitedly. • Boy = noun • Big = adjective • Excitedly = adverb • Jumped = Verb

  5. Suffix Suffix: a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word. Adding a suffix to a base word change its a word class: Example Child = noun (I was once a child) Childish = adjective (I met a childish man) Childishly = adverb (She acted childishly
