  4. Sure, buddy. You look PERFECTLY normal. If this person is being sarcastic, what can we infer the other person looks like?

  5. Her eyes poured tears, as she was shocked by her boyfriend’s words. She would never be the same again. What can we infer has just happened to the girl?

Defining the Word Inference • We can INFER the meaning of inference using the previous slides. • It means to reach a logical conclusion based on information presented in a text. • The author sometimes won’t tell us something directly but instead will expect us to figure out, or infer, it. • Inference=reading between the lines

  8. Inference Graphic Organizer On your paper, draw a chart like this with at least five spaces underneath the titles: As you read the story, fill in the first column with five quotes. They should come from places in the story where you are forced to infer something.
