  2. Roles Virginians Played During the War • Patriots • Virginians who were patriots: • Thought the colonies should be able to run their own government. • Were part of the Continental Army or a militia group.

  4. Roles Virginians Played During the War • Loyalists • Colonists that were loyalists: • Thought that England should continue to run the colonies. • Fought for the British during the war.

  8. Battle of Yorktown • The British surrendered to the colonists at Yorktown. • Surrender: To give up power during a conflict. • This battle was important because it ended the Revolutionary War and allowed the colonists to gain their independence.
