  1. Welcome to Curriculum Night for 8th Grade Math Instructor: Ms. Laura Christian Aprende Middle School Home of the Jaguars

A little about me… • Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees from ASU! • Married and have 2 rescued dogs and 2 rescued cats • Went to Pueblo and Corona • Teach extracurricular dance and theatre • Professional choreographer and dancer • A few hobbies and interests: sci-fi / fantasy books / marvel books and movies, theatre, dancing, baking, the Olympics

  3. Norms for 8th Grade • All students have an agenda to write their assignments in daily. This is also a tool for you so you know if they have homework or not. • All students are expected to be in their 1st Period Class ready to learn no later than 8:30am everyday. • Students must have all of their supplies with them every day. • Discipline – • In class refocus area. • Timeout in ISI Room • Parent contact/meeting • Office Referral

Classroom Rules • I have one main classroom rule and that is to be respectful. • We will spend the majority of the first week going over what respect looks like in the variety of settings in our school, in our classroom, and to each other. • Remember the gum policy. You will be sent to ISI for gum and given a time out referral. Repeat offenders will face further consequences. • Please drink all Starbucks type drinks, Arizona Iced Tea’s, etc. at home or before the first bell. You will be asked to throw away these kinds of drinks when you enter the classroom.

  5. Mathematics Tutoring • **Tutoring is offered on most Tuesdaysafter school from 3:30-4:15pm in my room. No personal invitation needed.** • Updates about class and assessments will be sent out in the 8C Team Newsletter every week. • Check my website for daily HW assignments and test dates and notes. • Check Parent Portal regularly for grades

  6. Show My Website • http://www.kyrene.org/lchristian • Great resource if you are absent. • Click on “This Week’s Homework and Notes” to look up daily hw if you forgot to write it down in class. You can find digital copies of worksheets to print if you lost yours. You can also review notes we use in class.

Important Geometry Dates • All Geometry students will take an Algebra Test the first Tuesday of school • YES, this is for a grade • It is imperative that students have a solid mastery of High School Algebra to succeed in Honors Geometry • If a student’s score is low on the Algebra test, I will contact parents and the student to discuss options

  11. Important Geometry Dates • High School Mid-Term = December 17th • High School Final = May 13th • Your child MUST be here on these dates to take these tests. There are no make-ups. • In order to get high school credit for this class, they need to get a 70% or higher on BOTH tests. They need to get 80% or higher to be placed in Honors Algebra 3-4 next year.

  12. Advanced Math Class Agreement • Students that take advanced level courses are expected to have a high degree of motivation as well as maintain high grades. • It is required that your child maintain a B average (80%) or higher. • If your child does not have at least a B average (80%) by the 5th week of the 1st quarter, he/she will be placed on probationary status. • If your child cannot pull up the grade to a B or higher by the end of 1st quarter, he/she will be placed back into the next lower math class. • A contract that will need to be signed by you and your child will be passed out on the first day of school. It will need to be signed and returned by the end of that week.

  13. Supplies • ½” - 1” 3 Ring Binder for MATH USE ONLY • 5 Tabbed Dividers • LOTS of Loose Leaf Lined Paper. (No Spiral Notebooks.) • LOTS of Pencils • Erasers • Pens • Highlighters • Scientific Calculator • Ruler • Protractor
