  3. What is an Apprenticeship? • Work based training programme • Aimed at current and future employees • Designed by business for business • Focus on the whole job, not just individual skills • On – and off-the-job education and training

  4. Apprenticeships Structure • Categories 16-18 year olds and 19+ (incl 25+) • Employed Status • Available at two levels: • Apprenticeship to Level 2 • Equivalent to 5 GCSE’s A- C grade • Advanced Apprenticeship to Level 3 • Equivalent to 2 A Levels

  5. Benefits to Employers • Better-trained employees, with the right skills • Improved productivity • Motivated and loyal workers • Potential managers / Leaders of the future • Improved retention especially in high turnover sectors • Addressing Skills Shortages

Content of Apprenticeship: • An Apprenticeship is not a qualification in itself • Common structure to all apprenticeships • Specific content determined by Sector Skills Councils • 180 Frameworks covering 80 industry sectors Apprenticeship NVQ Competence Based Tech Cert Theoretical Underpinning Knowledge Key skills qualifications

Funding Apprenticeships • 16 -18: year olds, full training cost met by the LSC • 19+: Employer Fee Assumption, expected (37% -50%) • Frameworks funded at different rates, see 2007/8 funding guidance: Annex B for examples or LAD • IT User FW: L2 16-18 £3,662 19+ £2,106 with 42.5% fee • Employer pays the Apprentice salary • LSC contract, minimum wage of £80:00 per week

Apprenticeships the Future • National Apprenticeship Service: April 2009 • 16-18 App entitlement by 2013 = 5% to 20%! • End to end Responsibility for all App Provision • Matching Service, Learners, Employer, Provider • London I.D. as especially poor performing region • Increase App’s from 240,000 to 400,000 by 2020

  13. Employer needs / Knowledge? • SME: Requests ‘French Polishing’ Apprenticeship? • This was available 20 years ago, why not now? • We have 17 year old employee? Why do we have to pay £8,000? • Sector Skills Council: Proskills website • Identify Framework L2, Making & Installing Furniture code (5614) Modular • Identify suitable provider?
