  3.  Homework Your teacher gave you a luggage label with the name of an evacuee on it for homework. Find someone else in the class and tell them about your evacuee. Under the heading ‘Similar stories’ make a note of any similarities between the experiences of evacuees. What are the problems in using these accounts?

  4. On June 2nd 1940, children from Folkestone County School for Girls and the Harvey Grammar School for Boys were evacuated to Cyfartha Castle near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Over 3000 children from the area were evacuated. Cyfartha Castle, Wales

  5.  Your task Pair up with another student. One of you should look for evidence to suggest life was positive & exciting, the other that life was frightening or unsettling. Share findings, and decide if on balance life for students was better back in Folkestone Read about the account a Harvey evacuee – were his experiences any different?

  6.  Your task • Imagine you are an evacuee. Write a letter home to your parents describing your arrival and your first few days with your foster family. Refer to the following: • How you were evacuated and matched with you foster family • Food & accommodation • Other children & your school / chores • Ask about preparations against attack back home & the ongoing Phoney War
