  2. Why was the French and Indian War fought? Answer: fought over land (Canada, land west of the Ohio River Valley); fur trade

  3. How did the French and Indian War contribute to the Revolutionary War? Answer: The war cost Great Britain a lot of money so King George III imposed new taxes to cover the costs.

  4. Describe 3 acts that contributed to the Revolutionary War. Answer: Stamp Act (tax on paper goods, newspapers, pamphlets); Townshend Act (tax on tea, glass, lead, paint); Intolerable Acts (different acts that were enforced after the Boston Tea Party); SugarAct (sugar, coffee); Quartering Act (house & feed British soldiers)

  5. What was the Boston Massacre? • Answer: 5 colonists were shot after colonists threw snowballs and rocks at British soldiers; it deepened the Americans distrust of the British military

  6. What was the Boston Tea Party? • Answer: colonists (called the Sons of Liberty) boarded British ships in Boston Harbor & dumped 342 crates of tea into the water to show their displeasure of unfair taxes

  7. Who were the Loyalists? Who were the Patriots? Answer: Loyalists remained loyal to Great Britain & King George III. Patriots wanted to gain their independence from Great Britain.

  8. Who were the Sons of Liberty? Answer: secret organization made up of merchants & journalists who opposed unfair taxes

  9. What was the Continental Congress? Answer: delegates from all colonies, except Georgia, met in Philadelphia to discuss the problems with Great Britain

  10. Why is the Battle of Lexington and Concord important to the war? Answer: “shot heard ‘round the world”; beginning of the war

  11. Why is the Battle of Saratoga important to the war? Answer: known as the ‘turning point of the war’; this American victory convinced the French to give money and military support to the Patriots

  12. Describe the seize of Fort Ticonderoga. Answer: Ethan Allen & Green Mountain Boys captured this fort from the British & used canons seized from the battle to win other battles in the war.

  13. What was George Washington’s role in the war? Answer: General and Commander of the Continental Army

  14. What was Thomas Jefferson’s role in the American Revolution? Answer: a founding father of the U.S.; wrote the Declaration of Independence

  15. What was Ethan Allen’s role during the war? Answer: militia leader who seized Fort Ticonderoga along with the Green Mountain Boys

  16. What was John Burgoyne’s role in the war? Answer: British general who was defeated in the Battle of Saratoga

  17. What was Sybil Ludington’s role in the war? Answer: known as the female Paul Revere; rode 40 miles through the night alerting troops that the British were raiding the Patriots’ supply shelter
