  1. Water Pollution in Hong Kong F.4D Group 3 Group Members: Lee On Sang (31) Li Cheuk Wing (34) Chan Ching Ching (23) Chan Ka Yi (24) Ma Yuet Kwan (36) Tang Hoi Tung (38) Lau Hiu Tung (30)

  2. Content • Main Types of Water Pollution in Hong Kong • Source of Stream Pollution • Source of Marine Pollution • Cause of Water Pollution in Hong Kong • Effect of Water Pollution in Hong Kong • Measures to solve Water Pollution in Hong Kong • Suggestions of Improving the Environment

  3. Main Types of Water Pollution in Hong Kong Marine Pollution Stream Pollution • Factories • Transport • Reclamation and Excavation • Domestic Source • Livestock Farms • Factories

  4. Sources of Stream Pollution Livestock Farms: • the pig and poultry farms produce a large amount of manure • is disposed into the streams with little treatment • brings organic waste and ammonia to the streams Factories: - dyeing and bleaching factories often discharge chemical wastes and metals into the streams

  5. Sources of Marine Pollution Factories: - discharge the hot water loaded with toxic chemicals and metals into sea - pollute the soils on land which are then dumped into sea Transport: - oil spillage from ships occasionally contaminates the sea

  6. Reclamation and Excavation: • reduce the rate of flow across the Harbour • pollutants are easily accumulated in the Victoria Harbour • reduces the dissolved oxygen for the aquatic organisms Domestic Source: • human excreta is discharged into the sea

  7. Cause of water pollution in Hong Kong Multiplicity of sources Lack of Infrastructure • many sources of water pollution • close to one another and in huge amount • lacks of treatment facilities • only 34% of Hong Kong's urban sewage receives primary treatment or better Insufficient Control • some illegal connections of waste water pipes to storm-water pipes • waste water will be discharged directly into sea without treatment

  8. Effects of Water Pollution To the ecosystem 1. Pollution reduces the rate of photosynthesis of plants in water and the amount of food resources. So fish productivity is reduced. 2.Cause the rise of red tides which devastate Hong Kong fisheries. The food chain will be affected as well.

  9. To the environment.. 3.Many beaches are polluted with solid wastes which means a loss of recreational resource. 4. Due to the polluted beaches, we have fewer places to carry out recreational activities.

  10. To our health.. • Drinking water containing pollutants pose hazards to health. Pathogens in water would cause illnesses in human. 5.Consumption of seafood accumulated with pollutants, would also affect our health.

  11. $ $ $ $ To the economy.. $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 6. Large amount of money is needed to mitigate the damage on the environment by the pollutants. $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $

  12. Measures to solve the problem of water pollution ( Government ) 1.Legislation and monitoring - The Water Pollution Control Regulations set the standards of water quality. - The harbours of Hong Kong are divided into ten Water Control Zones for better monitoring. - The livestock waste control scheme has been implemented. - The costs of treatment are borne by the polluters.

  13. (Hong Kong People) - Conserve water. This helps prevent water shortages and reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment. • Make sure that you take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers. This will prevent runoffs of the material into |nearby water sources. • Don’t throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans.

  14. Suggestions of Improving Environment to HK Recycling • HK has a heavy burden in landfills • further encouraged and improved • should be pushed towards city wide • limited household waste Better Use of Natural Gas -push towards to using natural gas for public transport Further Communicate with Mainland China • sign agreements • further improving the environment standards in China

  15. Effect on temperature in Air Conditioning • unique pollution in HK • encourage to reduce Urban Planning -better and more environment friendly urban design: more trees, more parks, more leisure, more greeneries -buildings and apartments shouldn't be built so close
