  4. The Purpose

  5. Purpose • The purpose of the boat float is to challenge students to use the scientific method to solve the problem involved in building a boat made of corrugated cardboard, masking tape, and paint and be capable of transporting one to three students from point A to point B across Plum Lake.

  8. Eligibility Requirements

  9. EligibilityRequirements • We look at these following criteria: • Grades – passing all classes during the current grading period • Discipline – referrals, d-halls, conduct, ISS/Denver/JJAEP assignments • These criteria for eligibility are determined by your teacher and principal

  10. EligibilityRequirements • You must have the permission form completely filled out by Tuesday, May 11, 2010, and turned into your science teacher. • Field trip permission form must also be turned in if it wasn’t taken care of at the beginning of the year

  14. Race Rules • Each boat must have a designated navigator. • Each group will race one-at-a-time. • To qualify as a finisher you and your boat must cross the finish line.

  15. Race Rules • After you have finished with your boat, you will throw it away in the dumpster or take it home • You WILL be disqualified if any part of your boat is not properly disposed of or is not taken home immediately.

  17. Safety Rules • You must wear a life jacket properly fastened while in the boat and/or water.

  18. Safety Rules • The passenger area of the boat must NOT be permanently enclosed above the shoulders. • Each boat must be free of sharp edges, pointy objects, or anything else that could be danger.

  19. Safety Rules • Consumption of food or beverage will not be permitted during the race. A designated lunch time is provided. • Absolutely no cell phone or MP3 players will be allowed at Plum Lake!!!! They are a safety hazard!

  20. Safety Rules • Students must wear shoes with a substantial sole and a closed-toe at during the entire building process and at Boat Float. • Clothing must follow WFISD guidelines.

  21. How Do I Build This Boat? Construction Rules There are only 4 materials allowed to be used on your boat.

  22. Construction Rules • Any thickness of corrugated cardboard is permitted, but no carpet tubes.

  23. Construction Rules 2) Only masking tape may be used and used only on seams, joints, or patches. (2 inch or wider)

  24. Construction Rules • ONLY latex caulking may be used to join seams or edges of cardboard or for patching holes.

  25. Construction Rules • ONLY latex paint is allowed to be used on your boat. Paint provides a temporary water barrier preventing the cardboard from absorbing water so quickly.

  26. Construction Rules • The entire boat must NOT be wrapped in tape, plastic, shrink-wrap, or anything else! • Styrofoam or other floatation type foam is NOT permitted as part of the construction of the boat.

  27. Construction Rules • The boat may be no bigger than 205 cm by 85 cm. • Students may receive help from relatives, friends, professionals, and former boat floaters. • Make sure whatever you put on your boat is school appropriate.

  34. Other Important Information • Keep restroom facilities at the sports complex clean and neat. • Clean up any trash or boat debris from the lake and/or sports complex.

  35. Boat Float Day Procedures • Sun block and/or hats (optional) • Water worthy clothing and shoes – complying with school rules • Insect repellant (optional) • Jacket (if needed)

  36. Other Important Information • No matter what the weather is, be prepared for the boat float. • Never say “I don’t know” when asked a question by a media person. • You need a change of clothes, underwear, shoes, & a towel if you are going in the water.
