Infinitive • to + simple form of verb • Functions as a NOUN: To eat soon is our goal. • Functions as an ADJECTIVE: The best way to survive Dr. Peterson's boring history lectures is a sharp pencil to stab in your thigh if you catch yourself drifting off. • Functions as an ADVERB: Kelvin, an aspiring comic book artist, is taking Anatomy and Physiology this semester to understand the interplay of muscle and bone in the human body.

  4. Past Participle • -edform of regular verb or equivalent for irregular verb • Functions as an ADJECTIVE: Boiled, filtered water is usually safe to drink. The lost coin was never found.

  5. Present Participle • -ingform of verb • Functions as an ADJECTIVE: Running water may not be safe.
