  17. What are some emotions evoked when viewing these images? • How long do you think it would take to rebuild these buildings and communities? • How much do you think it would cost? • Can a community ever really recover from such destruction? • To what extent should a defeated wartime enemy be punished?

  18. Imagine living in this…What do you do now? You look to worldly powers to solve the situation! To insure that this does not happen again which should be a priority? 1. Punish the losers of the war 2. Address issues that caused the war Both options were presented to the world powers…

  19. The Paris Peace Conference Palace of Versailles, France • the victorious nations meet to decide the fate of Europe • The Big Four: • Britain’s Lloyd George, • France’s Clemenceau, • Italy’s Orlando • President Woodrow Wilson • Who’s missing? • The Central Powers! • None were represented at the settlement talks. 

  20. President Wilson Has His Ideas for Peace 14 POINTS Ultimate Goal: Self Determination Addressed 3 things: 1. Remove the Causes of the War 2. Boundary Changes 3. International Peace Organization Thought: These will prevent another war! How Smart! Sounds like a great idea, right? WRONG - Both Congress and the Allies reject Wilson’s plan for peace - not strict enough

  21. Congress did not want to get dragged into European affairs by joining the League of Nations.

  22. The allies have their own ideas! REVENGE!!! Britain & France wanted to make Germany pay for the death, destruction, and hardship that they had caused.

  23. FINALLY, the Allies agreed upon… Treaty of Versailles • 9 NEW NATIONS CREATED FROM A/H (GB & FR will control) • - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Syria, Iraq, Transjordan, Palestine, Finland, Poland • 2. Demilitarized GER • No air force, Army only 100,000 (small • 3. GER had to pay Reparations (aka war damages) • - $56 BILLION • War Guilt Clause • - GER had to admit it was responsible for war

  24. Oh…but there’s some problems… HUMILIATED GERMANY! They weren’t the ONLY ones Guilty! Can’t pay Reparations…No one could! No Colonies to help them pay RUSSIA MAD They lost TONS of land…and they were on the Allies! CREATED INSTABILITY Disputes over Territories & governments

  25. Europe 1914 Europe 1919

  26. The Treaty of Versailles “sewed the seeds” for World War II. It created even more international unrest than before World War I!!! The US becomes Isolationist…and hides in the 1920’s
