  2. MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER’S OFFICE Aaron Han,MD, PhD, FCAP Consultant Pathologist Chief, Department of Pathology Acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) In 2016, the American Hospital Dubai will continue to focus on three major themes – access to services, personalized care, and innovation. Each of these key themes will help enhance our clinical services and patient care. INCREASING PATIENT ACCESS TO OUR SERVICES We are especially proud of our agreement with SAADA, under which eligible UAE nationals can access a comprehensive range of AHD medical procedures and services, including wellness and screening checks, with the benefit of direct billing. Our first new community clinic – Dubai Media City Clinic (DMCC) – has had a major impact on the community in its first 12 months of operation. DMCC was initiated with a suite of family-friendly services, staffed by a dedicated team of healthcare providers, delivering the same high standards of care as AHD main campus. Patients asked, and we responded by providing convenient access to high quality care within the communities where people live and work. We are now extending services beyond Primary Care (starting with gynecology and dermatology) and additional services will continue to be rolled-out through the year. SAADA (which means ‘happiness’ in Arabic) is a fantastic innovation providing valuable health insurance coverage for UAE nationals in Dubai with a focus on screening and prevention and ultimately personal and population wellbeing and health. Truly, this is a great testament to the Government of Dubai’s foresight and commitment to providing and ensuring the highest quality of healthcare for the country. TREATING THE INDIVIDUAL THROUGH PERSONALIZED MEDICINE We have also strengthened our relationships with insurers and TPAs (Third Party Administrators). The American Hospital Dubai works with around 80 international and local insurance companies. As a result we are caring for an increasing patient population in the UAE. Last year we formalized an agreement with the SAADA network, providing health insurance for UAE nationals in Dubai, and NEXtCARE the leading Third Party Administrator (TPA) for the insurance industry in the GCC and MENA region and a member of the Allianz Group. Individualized targeted therapies in cancer care are now a current reality. We see this every day as we care for patients with cancers especially of the lung, breast, brain, thyroid, and melanoma. In addition, because of many advances in therapies, many cancers are now chronic diseases and very stressful for patients and their families. These stresses require a close working, ARAB HEALTH 2016 | PAGE 2

The AHD Cancer Care Center provides adults and children with the full range of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services, including chemotherapy and the department in Dubai. The Cancer Care Center treats up to 50 patients every day and continues to grow as we become the one-stop comprehensive cancer center of choice. only radiotherapy One example is our SPECT-CT (single photon emission computed tomography) service. This medical imaging technique/ technology takes two different types of scans from a patient and fuses the images together to create a single 3D-image that gives more precise information and can identify cardiovascular and bone disease, and be extended to evaluate tumors or even Alzheimer’s disease. We are committed to you and to provide the best in class American-standard healthcare. The Cancer Care Center’s multidisciplinary team works with patients and families to provide a tailored personalized treatment programme for each and every patient, as each is unique in terms of their health condition, cultural background, and need for social support. Many of our patients truly consider AHD their extended “family”. ARAB HEALTH 2016 | PAGE 3

  4. INNOVATIONS AND NEW SERVICES PALLIATIVE CARE PARTNERS WITH ONCOLOGY TO SUPPORT PATIENTS The American Hospital Dubai’s Cancer Care Center opened in 2005 and offers adults and children a comprehensive range of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services, including chemotherapy and the only radiotherapy department in Dubai. The Center treats up to 50 patients every day, treating all forms of cancers, malignancies and blood disorders The American Hospital Dubai was the ‘Healthcare Partner’ to the UAE Cancer Congress 2015, where the Hospital inaugurated a palliative care program at the congress, chaired by Dr. Mona Tareen, (Geriatrician / Hospice & Palliative Care Specialist). The hospitals launched its palliative care service in December 2014. “Palliative Care focuses on the quality of life in patients, who may have life limiting illnesses, by focusing on the prevention of suffering and relief of symptoms particularly early in the course of the illness,” says Dr. Mona. “It addresses all the domains of pain, symptom management, spiritual existential and psychological aspects of care. Our service aims to provide supportive services and is integrated into oncology. It helps patients to better understand their illness and manage distressing clinical complications that may occur. The old concept of Palliative Care being applied at ‘end of life’ is no longer the case. It can be applied and is being applied in conjunction with active treatment as studies have shown improved symptom management, quality of life and helps patients through their disease trajectory.” The Palliative service comprises an Outpatient based alongside Oncology providing pain and symptom management as well as supportive care to oncology patients. The Inpatient arm supports consultants in managing all their medical issues and pain management. For the Cancer Care Center, Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses, focused on providing patients with relief from their symptoms and stress. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. for patients; the team can treat any complex case in adults and children, on an inpatient or outpatient basis. The Hospital’s multidisciplinary weekly Tumor Board –gathers experts who together consider and discuss the most complex cases – to assess proper treatment and follow-up. The Cancer Care Center team has access to the most comprehensive range of advanced medical technology – including the FACSCalibur™ Flow Cytometry system, the state of the art technology used in the fast and definitive diagnosis of cancers and tumors of the blood cells/ leukemia. 5. INNOVATIONS AND NEW SERVICES NEW ADVANCED REHABILITATION CENTER OPTIMIZES QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PATIENTS The American Hospital Dubai has opened an Advanced Rehabilitation Center to provide specialty care for patients requiring long-term care for serious conditions such as stroke or spinal cord injuries. The Center combines high-tech and high- touch to optimize the expertise of a multidisciplinary team. The holistic approach ensures care for the patient and their loved ones to help patients through their recovery and return to the highest possible quality of life and work. Rehabilitation is often needed to support patients after a massive stroke, for example, when the body may have lost half its normal functions affecting mobility, speech or resulting in significant brain damage. The aim is to get the patient back into the family home and community, living life as normally as possible. Rehabilitation includes intensive patient focus, and working with family members and other care providers, to help them adapt and support the patient. work with patients and families to adapt to these life-changing situations. Rehabilitation is still in its infancy in the Middle East. The American Hospital Dubai’s new Center will provide much-needed care to patients, who may face severely reduced mobility, speech or other bodily functions. These patients were not previously able to access this standard of care locally and had to travel outside the region. The American Hospital Dubai is already receiving patient referrals from our immediate region and beyond.” The outcomes for rehabilitation patients can be very good. Life expectancy for patients with these seriously debilitating conditions can be normal. However, specialty care is required long-term. The good news is that patients can live fully productive lives. With the right level of expert support and care, these patients can enjoy a high quality life involving their favourite activities, and memorable times spent with loved ones. The new Advanced Rehabilitation Center is a dedicated facility located in the hospital’s new Bed Tower. With a total of 22 private rooms, the center provides patient-centric therapy and comprehensive patient care under one roof.
