  4. Current Events • North Korean leader - praises the execution of his uncle - claims it brings unity to North Korea • Giant Rubber Duck pops - in Taiwan, started to deflate - new air pump inflated duck in 7 minutes, normally takes 60min - faster not always better

  6. Fall of Communism in Europe • Soviet Union economy failing - spent money on an “arms race” - loss of control - economy couldn’t compete with free market of the west • By the end of the 1980s - Eastern European countries took back control - Germany reunified - democratic governments emerged

  7. Soviet Union Falls • in 1989, Communism fails - government broke - no longer able to control territory • Soviet Union breaks up - Russia and 14 Republics - led to conflict • Move from Communism to Capitalism - fractured economies - growing pains • No Central Control

  8. Northern Europe • History of Conquest - use of the sea to conquer • Nordic Countries - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland • Also includes the United Kingdom

  9. Vikings • Conquerors - used long ships to raid coasts of Europe - invaded all parts of Europe and went into Russia • Spread culture and traditions
