  1. One Example of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God from Isaiah Mark 1:14; Isaiah 65:1-16

  2. Jesus Preached from the OT • Mark 1:14 • Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, One example of this could be the book of Isaiah; Isaiah is quoted 21 times in the NT

  3. Mark 7:6 • He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias [Isaiah] prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

  4. Luke 4:17 • And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias [Isaiah]. • And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

  5. Let’s Stand for the Reading Isaiah 64:11 – 65:16

  6. Isaiah 64.11-12 • Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste. Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O LORD? • wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?

  7. Question Have you ever felt like God was silent and distant? Have you ever wondered if there is a God and why hasn’t He answered me?

  8. Isaiah 65 is God’s answer to the question “How long will you keep silent?”

  9. God’s Answer Isaiah 65:1 • I am sought of them that asked not for me; • I am found of them that sought me not: • I said, Behold [see] me, behold [see] me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

  10. God’s Answer Isaiah 65:2 • I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

  11. Turn to Romans 10:12ff Esaias = Isaiah in AV

  12. How is God made manifest unto a people that did not seek Him? Turn back to Isaiah 64:1

  13. Isaiah 64:1 • Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,

  14. Mark 1:15 • And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened [rent], and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: The Silence is Over!

  15. Look at Isaiah 65:2 See God’s Omni-benevolence (disposition to do good)

  16. God’s Grace Isaiah 65:2 • I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts; Look down at v. 5b

  17. Isaiah 65:5b • These [the rebellious people] are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. All day long their rebellion is like smoke in the nostrils; and all day long YHWH extends hands of invitation

  18. Let’s Examine their Sin Isaiah 65:2b-5

  19. Accusation #1 Isaiah 65:2 • They are living in rebellion to God Rebellion opposition to one in authority or dominance

  20. Accusation #2 Isaiah 65:2 • They are not walking after God’s good way Where did this idea- As long as I am saved, God is “ok” with me not walking after his good way- come from?

  21. The Apostle John said: 1 John 1:7 • But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

  22. The Apostle John said: 3 John 4 • I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

  23. Accusation #2 Isaiah 65:2 • which walketh in a way that was not good, • after their own thoughts; Instead they walk

  24. “Own” Thoughts A popular pastor’s best-selling book has stirred fierce debate about sin, salvation and judgment.

  25. Outside of the glorious righteousness of Jesus Christ, I am just like the rebels.

  26. Accusation #3 Isaiah 65:3 • A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;

  27. Accusation #4 • Which remain among the graves, and lodge [spend the night] in the monuments, What are they doing among the dead all night long?

  28. “Christians” are increasingly fascinated with “new age”….

  29. Accusation #5 • which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels; What does the Torah say about eating unclean meat?

  30. Accusation #6 • Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. • holier-than-thou • Exhibiting an attitude of superior virtue; self-righteously pious

  31. God’s Response (v. 6-7) • Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom, Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.

  32. An Illustration of God’s Mercy Isaiah 65:8 • Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: • so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.

  33. A Promise from God Isaiah 65:9 • And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there. Abraham begat Isaac Begat Jacob

  34. Paul’s Understanding Galatians 3:16 • Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. • He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

  35. Luke 24:44 • And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Jesus is the seed; Jesus is the offspring Genesis 3:15

  36. The cross of crucifixion stands as the symbol of God’s outstretched hands saying “Behold me” to a rebellious people all day long.

  37. Isaiah 65:11 • But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. • But you who forsake the Lord, who forget my holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny,

  38. Isaiah 65:12 • Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, • ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear;but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

  39. Romans 1:19-20 • Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

  40. Isaiah 65:13-14 • Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

  41. Two Kinds of People Christ’s Servants Rebels Provoke God Do Evil Will Hunger Will Thirst Be Put to Shame Cry for Sorrow Will Howl Die by the Sword • Serve God • Do Good • Eat • Drink • Rejoice • Sing for Joy • Inherit the Land

  42. Cursed Isaiah 65:15 • And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, Cursed vs. Blessed

  43. Isaiah 65:15b-16 • and call his servants by another name: • That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.

  44. Conclusion Matthew 25:31ff
