  7. Paradigm Shift from Closed To Open The negative aspects are exclusivity, corruption possibilities, competitivenessand people tend to become passive recipients of the system THE CLOSED:The Pyramid Hierarchical Systems Model Still the Major Global Model in use. This model is effective when few are educated and enabled for leadership, and communication is limited

  8. The Open System Model functions best when there is shared education, and abundant communication possibilities. Inclusiveness based on a shared mutuality. Integrity increases collaboration possibilities. Almost Everyone is Involved, following their talents and skills that contribute to the entirety of the Culture

  9. The Pyramid Closed Systems Model as Related to Healthcare Person is often passive within the system The healthcare system is “Repair/Restore” Oriented

  10. Biggest Shift in Healthcare Will Be Person Centered “Wellness” Within an Open System From physical fitness alone to body/mind/spirit fitness/well being

  11. Wellness Education • From physical fitness alone to body/mind/spirit fitness/well being • From Isolated Departments dividing up Related Fields of Knowledge to interdisciplinary Collaboration • From an Academic Subject to School/Campus Wide Involvement • From Subject Matter to Collaborations with: School/Campus Environment, Integrated Health/Wellness Professionals, Community Agencies, even the Insurance Industry

  12. The Place of Wellness Education in Global Education • Wellness is a Major Global Education Curriculum Area for all Grades. • Curriculum Areas: • Personal Wellness Emphasis – Personal Culture • Socio/Cultural Wellness Emphasis – Within & Between Cultures • World Health Issues -- Cross Cultural • Eastern and Western Approaches to Wellness – Cultural Study and Exchange • Global Wellness Standards – Basic Wellness Standards for All People

  13. Sustainability Education We could liken “Sustainability” to the “Wellness” of our planet and all life on it. The planetary health is perhaps in as bad a shape as human health in the United States. Activism and collaborations have been going on to stop the ravaging destruction. Activism and collaborations are going on to press preservation and conservation efforts. Once again, we educators are playing a major role in preparing students to recognize sustainability issues, and respond to existing sustainability problems.

  14. The Place of Sustainability in Global Education Global Security and Peace is Directly Related to the Adequacy of: Water, Food, Shelter, and Shared Quality of Life – which involve natural resources • Just a few Sustainability Curriculum Areas, adaptable to almost all Grades • Eco Sustainability: Renewable and Non-renewable Natural Resources -- what are the differences, and how do we have to respond to each • Bio Sustainability All species and forms of Life – how do we stop extinctions and protect existing forms • Historical and Current Conflicts Over Natural Resources-- let’s not repeat history • Global Security: Fair Access and Use of natural resources -- this is one sure way to reduce conflicts • Population, Pollution, and Progress-- all three are related and must be brought into balance • Overall: Balancing and Integrating Human Culture with Ever Changing and Dynamic Natural Environment -- nature is going to always challenge us

  15. How Wellness and Sustainability are Connected: • Healthy People in a Healthy World • Primary Global Issues for Global Education And extends to all life and resources Begins with individuals A global culture of well being • Without Adequate Renewable and Non-renewable Natural Resources, people will not have the water, soil, agriculture, etc. for viable standards of living, and their personal wellness will suffer. WE HAVE TO HAVE A HEALTHY WORLD FOR HEALTHY PEOPLE • Also, people without developed Personal Wellness are prone to activities that are of detriment to themselves and all other life, from local to global levels. WE HAVE TO HAVE HEALTHY PEOPLE TO HAVE A HEALTHY WORLD • We Need to DEVELOP HEADS, HEARTS, AND HANDS

  16. To Conclude: • Basic Concepts Underlying Wellness and Sustainability in Global Education: • The Open Systems Model is vital • The Essential Link between Healthy People and a Healthy World • The Conflicts generated by people who do not embrace their own wellness, others’ wellness, or the “wellness” of the planet • Neither knowledge or technology will solve global issues – only people who have come to understand mutual and shared well being • Both Sustainability and Wellness require human values and actions that are compatible with these • What the world most shares: the Natural Resources and being Human. Global education must include education to promote both.
