  3. ‘The health & wellbeing of young Australians 2008’ – Richard Eckersley Cultural fraud – not only dissatisfied with what they have BUT ALSO with who they are! The more materialistic people are the poorer their quality of life Never better or getting worse?

  4. Eckersley – all aspects of human wellbeing: not just material, but SOCIAL, CULTURAL and SPIRITUAL The need to belong is more important than the need to be rich In developed nations at any one time 20%-30% of young people suffer significant psychological distress Health and wellbeing

  5. The Bible: intrinsically bad – fatally flawed by sin Humanists: intrinsically good – history tells us differently No-one is righteous Romans 3:10-18 The flesh v. the Spirit Galatians 5:19-23 Understand the nature of man

  6. Your choice! Happiness and balance OR Conflict and dissatisfaction

Premodern circa 475 AD to 1789 Medieval times to the French revolution - everyone knew there was a spiritual realm Modernism 1789 to circa 1989 ‘Enlightenment’, rational enquiry, scientific discovery. FAILED. Postmodernism No absolute truth. Truth is: ‘what works for me or my community?’ Anarchy Proverbs 21:2 The world we live in – what is truth?

  8. Market driven, seeker sensitive churches Meet felt needs – provide experience – truth? Word of God – truth? Postmodern Christianity

  9. The premodern world view was and still is a more fertile ground for the spread of the gospel and happiness and balance in life, than modernism or postmodernism Evidenced by great revivals in Africa, PNG and Brazil The simplicity of the gospel

  10. Airbrushed out of our hearts and minds What does the Bible say? Man’s greatest problem is misdiagnosed – our society is founded on fundamental deceptions Societies are different but the truth is the same Whatever happened to sin?

Life is more than food & clothing Matt 6:25 Our problems stem from our separation from God (sin) Rom 3:10-18 One way to God through Jesus John 14:6 The Bible – God’s truth and the framework for the existence of all life Acts 17:28 Born of water & the Spirit – no longer separated from God and growing spiritually every day John 3:5, Eph 4:13 Only pride holds us back 1 Cor 8:2 Our answers to the challenge
