  1. TREMORS

  2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • List the precautions taken during tremor. • List the procedure to be taken when tremor has stopped. • List the various advisories given by BCA

  3. SCOPE • INTRODUCTION • WHEN TREMOR OCCURS • AFTER TREMOR HAS STOPPED • ADVISORIES BY BCA • CONCLUSION

  4. INTRODUCTION TREMORS • Singapore lies outside the earthquake zone. • However, an earthquake in the region may result in minor earth tremors being felt in certain parts of Singapore.

  5. TREMORS INTRODUCTION • These minor tremors normally do not cause significant damage. • Knowing the precautions to take when a tremor occurs can help you avoid unnecessary anxiety or injury.

  6. TREMORS WHEN A TREMOR OCCURS • Keep calm. • Stay where you are. • Take cover under a desk, table or against interior walls. • Stay away from anything that could fall and hurt you. • Do not use the lift. Take cover

  7. TREMORS WHEN A TREMOR OCCURS • Do not use any naked flames during and after the tremor as there might be a gas leak. • Do not be alarmed if the electricity is cut off or any fire alarm is activated.

  8. TREMORS WHEN A TREMOR OCCURS • If you are outdoors, stay away from buildings and overhead electrical cables. • Remain in the open until the tremor stops. Keep away from building

  9. TREMORS WHEN A TREMOR OCCURS • If you are driving, stop as quickly as safety permits. • Stay in your vehicle. • Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, bridges, overpasses or overhead electrical cables. Stop vehicle and remain inside

  10. AFTER THE TREMOR HAS STOPPED TREMORS • Do not touch damaged electrical wiring. • Report any gas leaks. • Give help to those who are injured or require assistance. • Call the Police/SCDF if necessary. Don’t touch damaged wiring

  11. AFTER THE TREMOR HAS STOPPED TREMORS • Do not rush for the exit or it may start a stampede • Report any incidents or issues of law and order to the Police Leave in an orderly manner

  12. AFTER THE TREMOR HAS STOPPED TREMORS • Check your home for any structural defects and alert the relevant authorities:-- Building and Construction Authority (BCA) - 6325 7720 -- HDB Essential Maintenance Service serving your area • According to BCA and HDB, the buildings are designed to withstand earth tremors. Check for structural defects

  13. ADVISORIES BY BCA TREMORS • Buildings in Singapore are designed to establish building codes and are sufficiently robust to withstand tremors caused by distant earthquakes. Hence there is no need for evacuation. • Evacuation is only necessary when there is visible sign of structural defects on building elements such as new cracks on the walls, floor, parapet, columns and beams

  14. ADVISORIES BY BCA TREMORS • Evacuation is only necessary when there is visible sign of structural defects, for example cracks on the wall, as a result of these tremors. • Once cracks or other structural defects develop, residents/occupants in private buildings should call BCA at 63257720 and those in HDB should call HDBs Essential Maintenance Service Unit’s 24-Hour Hotline at 6275 5555 and 6354 3333
