  1. Solar & Lunar Eclipses

  2. Objective: To learn the difference between a solar & lunar eclipse, & what causes them.

  3. What does just the word “Eclipse” Mean? ?

  4. “Eclipse”: Means to “Block Out”. Moon

  5. “Lunar”: Means Moon

  6. Color & label diagram Sun E

  7. Add these lines. Sun E

  8. Color & label shadow Umbra:Black Shadow Sun E

  9. Why is the Umbra black? ?

  10. Because No light rays pass thru it!

  11. Now add these lines. Umbra:Black Shadow Sun E

  12. Label the penumbra. Sun E Penumbra: Grey Shadow

  13. Why is the penumbra gray? ?

  14. Because some light passes thru it!

  15. Add these lines Sun E Penumbra: Grey Shadow

  16. Now add orbit circle! Sun E

  17. Label Full Moon Umbra Sun E Penumbra Full Moon

  18. Label Partial Eclipse Umbra Sun E Partial Eclipse Full Moon

  19. Label Total Eclipse Umbra Total Eclipse Sun E Partial Ecl. Full Moon

  20. Label Total Eclipse Full Moon Umbra Total Eclipse Sun E Partial Ecl. Full Moon

  21. Explain at the bottom Full Moon Umbra Total Eclipse Sun E Partial Ecl. Explain: This is where the moon passes between the sun & the earth to block the moon.

  22. One of these lasts about 90 minutes. They occur 2-5 times a year. The correct order they line up is: Sun, Earth Moon.

  23. Why do they occur 2-5 times a year and not every month?

  24. Because the Earth & Sun are in 1 orbit plane, & the Earth & Moon are in a different orbit plane. See diagram

  25. Note that because of the orbit angle the moon is above or below the Earth. Sun E

  26. What kind of Eclipse is this (Total?Partial?)

  27. What kind of Eclipse is this (Total?Partial?)

  35. What does the word “Solar” Mean? ?

  36. It means Sun. In a Solar Eclipse the moon blocks out the Sun.

  37. Color & label diagram Sun E

  38. Draw in these lines. Sun E

  39. Label the Umbra. Umbra: Black Shadow Sun E

  40. Draw in these lines. Sun E

  41. Label the Penumbra. Sun E Penumbra: Gray Shadow

  42. Draw in the orbit circle Total Eclipse Sun

  43. Label the Eclipses Total Eclipse Sun Partial Eclipse

  44. Explain at the bottom. Umbra Total Eclipse Sun Partial Eclipse Penumbra Explain:This is where the moon passes between the Sun & Earth.

  45. Here is what a Solar Eclipse looks like:

  46. What part of the Sun is visible around the edges of the moon?

  47. You see the Corona poke out around the moon’s edges.

  48. You are seeing the “Dark side of the Moon”

  49. One of these lasts about 3-4 minutes & they occur 0-3 times a year. The correct order they line up is: Sun, Moon, Earth.
