English II Terms 1 Context Clues -words or phrases in a sentence or a paragraph that are understood and can be used to determine a word or phrase that is not understood Analogy - comparison between two items (English uses analogies to find relationship between two words) Synonyms - words that have the same or similar meaning Antonyms - words that have the opposite meanings Juxtaposition - placing side by side to compare and contrast

Inference - using logic or reasoning to figure something out that isn’t stated specifically • Conclusion - using inference to make an assumption or a judgment based on the information or evidence given • Analyze -to examine by separating into parts and studying their relationships • Evaluate - to examine and judge carefully / to give value to something (the verb) • Synthesize - putting together information from more than one source

  3. Impact - influence or effect • Accurate - free from error; precise • Appropriate - suitable or fitting for a particular purpose • Emphasize - to stress or give importance to something • Effective - adequate to accomplish a purpose; producing the intended or expected result

  4. Explication - type of explanation that interprets or clarifies the text (a lot like main idea) • Paraphrase - putting text in your own words • Summary/Precis – a shorter version of the text that gives only the main points • Abstract - a very brief summary of a much longer text that is used during research to scan an article • Excerpt - a passage or segment taken WORD FOR WORD from a longer work
