  1. “It’s A New Day”(Psalm 118:24) Speaker: Bruce Sloan Evangelism & Church Health Consultant Northwest Baptist Convention Vancouver, Washington

  2. Dr. Cliff Arnall -- British Psychologist • Developed a formula to determine the worstday of the year… • Key Factor: Elapsed time since Christmas • January 24received the dubious distinction of being “the most depressing day of the year.” • Why? Christmas Debt; Failed Resolutions & Relationships; Winter Weather; S.A.D.

  3. Dr. Edith Burney • International Mission Board/SBC Appointed Missionary (retired) • Served in Ogbomosho, Oyo, Nigeria • Serving as CVBC “Adults On Mission” Leader • Psalm 118:24 = her voicemail message

  4. PSALM 118:24 • “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (ESV; CSB; NASB) • “This is the day Adonai has made, a day for us to rejoice and be glad.” (CJB) • “This is the day the Lord has brought about. We will be happy and rejoice in it.” (NET) • “The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.” (NIV)

  5. The Big Idea • Generally speaking, the LORD makes every day by His Sovereign will, and there is reason to rejoice and be glad. • Specifically speaking, the LORD JESUS entered Jerusalem one day knowing that he would face the cross and die for our sins. We can rejoice and be gladin God’s grace and provision for us through Jesus Christ.

  6. 1. THIS IS THE DAY – THE LORD MADE • “…I am going to bring my servant, the Branch…9 See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua!... 10 “‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree,’ declares the Lord Almighty” (Zechariah 3:8-10, NIV). • Messianic Prophecy: declaring the coming Messiah = The Lord Jesus Christ

  7. “HALLEL” = PSALM 113-118 • The “HALLEL” was sung on Feast Days: • Psalm 113 & 114 before the Passover meal • Psalm 115-118 chanted at the close of Passover • Matthew 26:30, after the institution of the Lord’s Supper they sang a hymn…probably Psalm 118 or the HALLELas they departed to the Mt. of Olives

  8. A NEW DAY • …the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses” (Joshua 1:1-3, NIV).

  9. A NEW LEADER • 5 “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them(Joshua 1:5-6, NIV).

  10. A RENEWED PROMISE • 7 “Be strong and very courageous…do not turn from it to the right or to the left…8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;… 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:7-9, NIV).

  11. AN OPEN DOOR • “…These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name” (Revelation 3:7-8, NIV).

  12. 2. LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD • The Septuagint translates rejoice with the verb agalliao which is derived from “agan” = much + “hallomai” = jump; gush, leap, spring up and thus means literally to "jump much", "leap for joy", skip and jump with happy excitement and so to be exceedingly joyful, overjoyed or exuberantly happy. • WE {BAPTIST’S} CAN…#J-U-M-P for J-O-Y

  13. Philippians 2:14, 16-18 (NIV) • 14 Do everything without grumbling and arguing,… 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

  14. Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV) • 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  15. “THIS IS THE DAY” • In his book, Shadows on the Wall, he tells of Bessie snatching up a glass-cutting tool from the kitchen, Old Bessie ran upstairs and scrawled the words on the windowpane. “There!” she thought. “Now I shall see that little bit of God’s Word every morning when I draw up the blind, and I will say to myself, ‘This is the day God made…and I will rejoice and be glad!’” (F. W. Boreham, 1871-1959)
