  1. New England  Massachusetts Main Idea: Religion was at the center of Puritan government and community life. Why? Puritans wanted to form communities where they could follow the rules of the Bible and serve their God.

  2. New England  Massachusetts • Puritan religion shaped the government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. • How? • Only male members could vote or serve in town government. • Town leaders made laws to control how people worshipped. • Required all people to attend church services.

  3. New England  Massachusetts Most important building in the Puritan community: Meetinghouse! Town meeting: a gathering where colonists held elections and voted on the laws for their towns.

  4. New England  Massachusetts Self-government: when people make laws for themselves.

  5. New England  Rhode Island Dissenter: person who does not agree with the beliefs of his/her leaders. Roger Williams: *wanted more religious freedom and *believed government should not make laws about religion; * banished!!! (force someone to leave) 

  6. New England  Rhode Island Roger Williams: founded a new colony where people could worship freely and government was separate from church. *Important event in the history of religious freedom in North America!!

  7. New England  Rhode Island Anne Hutchinson: challenged church leaders; held meetings in her home where men and women discussed religion – banished!!! (moved to Rhode Island)

  9. New England  Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine Thomas Hooker: minister who didn’t like the Puritan’s laws; wanted ALL men to vote; founded Hartford.

  10. Conflicts over Land Main idea: Puritans and American Indians fought over land in New England Pequot War King Philip’s War The settlement of New England led to war with American Indians.
