Symbolic Frame Assumptions • What is most important isn’t what happens, but what it means. • Activity and meaning are loosely coupled; events have multiple meanings because people interpret experience differently. • In the face of widespread uncertainty & ambiguity, people create symbols to resolve confusion, increase predictability, find direction, & anchor hope/faith.

  4. Many events & processes are more important for what is expressed than what is produced. They forma cultural tapestry of secular myths, heroes/heroines, rituals, ceremonies, & stories that help people find purpose and passion in their personal and work lives. • Culture is the glue that holds an organization together and unites people around shared values and beliefs.

  6. Myths, Vision & Values • Myths – the story behind the story • Explain / Express / Legitimize / Comm Unconcious Wishes & Conflicts • Often originate in the founding of an org. • Anchor an orgs values. • Vision • Turns the orgs core ideology into a vision of the future

Stories and Fairy Tales • Stories offer comfort, reassurance, direction, and hope. • Convey information, morals, values, & myths vividly & convincingly. • Pass along corporate traditions • Train employees • Empower People • Recognize Accomplishments • Spread the word • Have fun • Recruit / Hire the right people • Make Sales • Develop better mgrs
