  1. Network Concepts Final Project David Arzabe M

  2. Introduction • As the Internet spread over the world during the 1990’s, businesses started noticing opportunities for using the new technologies to carry out their operations. Examples of these developments generated concepts such as e-commerce, e-business among others. The evolution of processes such as e-commerce led to the creation of a new way of dealing with everyday tasks for organizations. Email, intranets, databases and the challenges that technology implies have become the focus of many firms over the last decade. A large number of applications and projects can be developed using internet technologies in order to improve performance and operations of a company.

  3. Objectives • The main objective of this project is to develop a model for exemplifying the way INTRANETs and EXTRANETS can support the development of communications between two businesses. For this purpose we will describe the structures used on each business in detail in order to study the functional aspects of the business operations that involve networking and communications within each of those companies.

  4. Concepts • E-business (e-business) or electronic business refers to commercial activities performed over computers and related technologies mainly through networks such as intranets, extranets, and the Internet to improve business operations. E-business and ecommerce are often viewed to be the same, however this is incorrect. Ecommerce is simply a part e-business, more specifically, a trading and transactional aspect of e-business.

  5. Concepts E-business and Intranets • An intranet is network of computers that belong to an organization. Companies use intranets to efficiently share information such as work-related documents and to facilitate communication and data flow amongst its users. It's a private network, thus only authorized users may have access. E-business and Extranets • An extranet is a computer network that allows authorized people outside the company access to certain areas of the system. Extranets can deal with communications and business processes with suppliers, vendors, and business partners.

  6. Concepts E-business and the Internet • The Internet is the global network of interconnected computer networks. The Internet provides new business opportunities to those who embrace it. The Internet is here and it presents access to most of the population, however there are still certain locations that have no access points to the internet. From the business point of view carrying out operations over the internet is still not one of the more preferred ways but certainly can represent an opportunity in many cases.

  7. Application • For our example case we will provide a example for a description of a generic company that produces designs of products on requirement by the customer. For this case the customer requires the selling company for a design of an specific product with certain specific characteristics, the main factor here is that the customer can be located anywhere with a point of access to the system in order to require the design to be produced.

  8. Conclusions • The internet can facilitate business if well utilized • It is important to have a well developed network design • One has to be careful with the implementation of the architectures for software and hardware • The most expensive does not always means the best • Several software applications are available on the market for specific business purposes
