    5. Okanagan Campus - Programs Southern Medical Program Management allied with the Sauder School of Business Engineering receives full accreditation Spanish summer field school Math taught from an Aboriginal perspective Southern Medical Program The Southern Medical Program will become the fourth site in UBC’s MD undergraduate program, with 32 students starting in 2011. Management and Sauder The Faculty of Management at UBC's Okanagan campus and the Sauder School of Business at UBC's Vancouver campus have established an alliance that will further open doors for research innovation, resource efficiencies, career service expansion and student opportunities. The alliance capitalizes on each faculty's unique strengths -- the heritage of business education at the Vancouver campus and the culture of innovation at the Okanagan campus. Engineering The first-ever Engineering graduates from UBC's Okanagan campus had something extra to celebrate at their Convocation ceremony this morning. They learned that the School of Engineering has received full accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Spanish Summer Field School Increase your Spanish fluency, expand your intercultural fluency and delve into Community Service Learning abroad by supporting Mayan community development projects! Escuela de Verano UBC/UQROO Spanish Summer Field School consists of 3 individual courses for a total of 9 credits: two delivered at UBCO, one delivered in Chetumal, Mexico. Aboriginal math course Faculty and staff at UBC’s Okanagan campus have designed a new foundational mathematics course that uses an Aboriginal perspective in the application of basic math concepts. Although specifically geared to Aboriginal students in the Access studies program, the course is open to anyone who would like to gain a better understanding of math by combining Aboriginal thought and traditional mathematical training. The design of the course is based on an ancient symbol used by many First Nations people in North and South America: the medicine wheel. It expresses relationships in sets of four, with a focus on wholeness and interrelationships. The course, math 126, can serve as an introductory pre-calculus course, and provides an academic stepping stone for students wishing to pursue the sciences. 6. Facilities Centre for the Advancement of Psychological Science and Law (CAPSL) Nonis Sports Field Media Centre CAPSL Faculty and students at UBC now have a brand-new space to pursue the latest research in the field of forensic psychology. Designed to emerge as a nationally and internationally renowned centre for forensic psychological research, practice and training, the Centre focuses on four key areas at the cross-section of psychology and law: personality/psychopathy and aggression investigative psychology (deception, memory) legal decision-making violence interventions and victim services Nonis Sports Field The facility includes a 153m by 75m artificial turf sports field, 300-seat bleachers, team rooms and washrooms, and full-field lighting. "This artificial field extends our season dramatically," said Rob Johnson, Director of Athletics and Recreation, at the opening ceremony. "We are extremely grateful to the entire Nonis family, whose support has provided the facilities to run our Heat soccer and community recreational soccer further into the fall and earlier in the spring, as well as add ultimate Frisbee, an intramural rugby program, and many other field sports as the community's needs change over time.“ Media Centre YouTube's slogan boasts "Broadcast Yourself." The slogan at UBC's Okanagan campus could soon become "Broadcast your Learning" with the emergence of the Learning Services Media Centre and its emphasis on teaching and learning new media skills. "It truly is a collaborative learning environment for everyone on campus,” says Gwen Zilm, AVP Learning Services, describing the Media Centre as a place “where students can take workshops in all aspects of video production, receive assistance in the planning, the producing, the editing, the file management and the broadcasting of videos, and where faculty can collaborate with creative and technical staff in the design of media-based assignments.“ The Media Centre in this phase of the project has made available a studio and teaching lab with 12 editing suites, high-definition cameras, portable hard drives and production support staff assistance for students in open lab sessions throughout the week. 7. Students & Student Initiatives Heat Athletics Women’s golf team claims national silver Heat volleyball and basketball teams join Canada West Student Engagement Human kinetics students gain field experience Nursing students head to Ghana and Zambia Engineers for a better world UBC undergrad wins international award in Australia Heat Athletics This is the second year in a row that the women’s golf team has taken home a national silver medal. UBC Okanagan Heat will begin a three-year term as probationary members, effective September 2010, and will begin interuniversity athletic competition in the sports of men's and women's basketball and volleyball in the fall of 2011. Canada West membership gives UBC Okanagan a competitive advantage in student-athlete recruiting, Johnson says, noting that UBC Okanagan has been very successful in attracting top-level student athletes out of high school, but some outstanding student athletes have their hearts set on immediately playing in the CIS. Human Kinetics UBC Human Kinetics students are out in the community getting hands-on work experience by volunteering their skills to various organizations in the Okanagan. A group of nearly 50 fourth-year students, who will be the first cohort to graduate from the Human Kinetics program at UBC's Okanagan campus next June, are working at gyms and sports organizations, schools, private health clinics, non-profit societies and public health organizations. "We've had fabulous reception from people in the community," says Sally Willis-Stewart, assistant professor of Human Kinetics. "It has been a very rewarding situation for both our students and the organizations involved. Nursing Nursing students from UBC's Okanagan campus are heading to Africa to deliver medical supplies and work with rural health clinics in Ghana and Zambia next February. Engineers for a Better World Engineers at the Okanagan campus prepare to send a volunteer to Africa who will aid in engineering sustainable solutions that improve the quality of life for those living in the community. Haiti After spending two weeks volunteering with a medical team in earthquake-ravaged Haiti in September, third-year UBC nursing student Fallon Smith returned to the Okanagan determined to maintain her connections to Haiti and continue helping the people who live there. Smith says that after the devastating earthquake in Haiti last January, she felt a strong desire to become involved in the disaster relief efforts and applied to volunteer with a number of organizations lending a hand. "I was desperate to get involved," says Smith. "For months I wasn't able to find a way. Then, someone from an organization called New Reality International contacted me saying I was invited to join their September 1 medical team." Although the 20-year-old nursing student had no prior experience in disaster relief nursing, Smith was chosen as the first North American university student ever accepted to go on a mission with the group. International Award Andrew Hughes, a psychology (honours) student at UBC's Okanagan campus, has returned to Kelowna from the Universitas 21 (U21) Undergraduate Research Conference in Melbourne, Australia, having earned the "Best Presentation" award for his innovative undergraduate research. Hughes and 36 other students from 15 countries -- representing 23 of the world's top research universities -- gave oral presentations at the annual conference, which brings together students from around the globe to showcase their research for an international audience of fellow students and academics. "I feel that I have really contributed something valuable to the scientific community," says Hughes, whose research investigates the relative competencies of the brain's left and right hemispheres in processing emotion.
