Library and Information Science • Librarians have felt the pinch of organizing information bases forever • Comprehensive categorization schemes • In depth indexes, taxonomies and cross listing schemes • Information scientists have studied the gross and minute structure of information • How do we look for information? • How can information be retrieved? • What is relevance? • These efforts have too often not made it out of the U and the library • LIS’ers have a leg up on the management process

  12. The Software Industry • Software developers (and architects) were the first to confront the issue of the Computer Human Interface • How to represent functionality • How to capture and direct attention • How to convey meaning in an impoverished environment • Developed robust technologies for manipulation, storage and display • PERL and all media applications • The database and XML file • The Browser • The software industry gave CM the power and the most basic principles of ePublicaiton

  13. The Multimedia Industry • MM developers were first to feel the pinch of multiple simultaneous display of digital media • Digital asset management systems • The concept of production • All of our basic digital design principles (the icon, media controls, button bars, etc.) • Created the first end to end content management systems The Multimedia industry pioneered digital publication was the first to confront the whole CM problem
